We have been working in the High Point area of North Carolina with the homeless, a lot of poor people and drug addicts, many of those whom society has just given up on. One of the things we do is collect people’s old furniture, and as we are able to help get folks off the street and into a home—maybe through a government-sponsored program or something—we furnish their new living space. We constantly give away the NLT Bibles. It’s so fun to see these street people show up to church on Sunday carrying their Bibles. We like the NLT because it’s easy to understand, even for those with a lower education, or for younger children. About a year ago my husband was laid off . He’s always wanted to work with the poor, so, although he kept searching for a new job, he pretended that this outreach was his full-time job. Over the course o f that year we kept purchasing Bibles to give away in our ministry. God has absolutely provided for us, and even though we were considered average income, we felt wealthy. My husband now has a new full-time job, but we still keep a box of Bibles here at home just to be ready for anyone who needs one.
