MUCH MORE THAN SKIN DEEP

Shariva Nel Beauty Therapy student Advanced Diploma in Beauty Therapy at Shadonai Beauty School, Namibia

With an estimated 51% of the Namibian population currently unemployed, City & Guilds is giving learners like Shariva Nel the hands-on skills to kick-start their careers and help rejuvenate the economy. Turning a pastime into a career is a common dream, and when Shariva decided to turn her passion for make-up into a career in the beauty sector, she realised how challenging the job marketplace is in Namibia. ‘The beauty therapy market is

extremely competitive, especially where there are lots of unqualified therapists operating,’ says Shariva. She decided to help herself stand out from the crowd by studying for a City & Guilds Advanced Diploma in Beauty Therapy at Shadonai Beauty School in Windhoek. ‘As well as acquiring the skills of my

trade,’ says Shariva, ‘I’ve found that my business sense and client care have improved dramatically, and I’ve learned self-discipline and perseverance. I also have a more positive outlook.’ Shariva has also been inspired to think more about her future. ‘If I don’t become a lecturer at Shadonai,’ she says, ‘then I want to work for myself, and run a business of my own.’
