Pakistan has been a strong focal point in 2010-11, as City & Guilds helps its training centres deliver qualifications to a wider range of students than ever.
The City & Guilds representative in Pakistan Skills International (SKILLS), is developing approved training centres to deliver City & Guilds qualifications to learners in the country. In 2010-11, SKILLS has been focusing on ensuring that there are sufficiently well-trained individuals to deliver qualifications across the country.
City & Guilds qualifications on offer
in Pakistan range from English to engineering, with the latter a focus of one of City & Guilds’ key training centres, AMANTECH. A budding vocational centre, there are plans to train up to 5000 students at one time at AMANTECH. SKILLS has been assisting the development of the centre’s training programmes, which aim to train learners in motor vehicle engineering, fabrication and electrical engineering skills. At The Hunar Foundation, another
training centre in Pakistan, SKILLS was asked to help the centre fine-tune its training processes in refrigeration and air conditioning, as well as other engineering-related areas. The way in which City & Guilds is developing programmes across Pakistan, coupled with the fact that training centres are actively seeking City & Guilds’ consultancy, suggests a bright skills future for this region of the world.

South African partners
Learners in South Africa reaped the rewards of a partnership between City & Guilds and the Culture, Arts, Tourism, Hospitality and Sport Sector Education and Training Authority (CATHSSETA).
A groundbreaking new partnership between City & Guilds and South Africa’s CATHSSETA allowed learners to achieve a City & Guilds qualification by completing their usual training programme. By doing so, learners effectively doubled up, gaining an internationally recognised City & Guilds award as well as one on the South African National Qualification Framework, without having to study for extra modules. The CEO of CATHSSETA, Mike
Tsotetsi, said: ‘It is our responsibility at CATHSSETA to ensure that learners have access to the same level of education and skills training as their counterparts across the world. The partnership with City & Guilds will encourage international investor confidence since we now have an opportunity to provide a qualification that has international recognition.’
The Hong Kong workplace
City & Guilds has been offering vocational qualifications in Hong Kong for 30 years, with an office in the region since 1996. In July 2011, City & Guilds was the only UK awarding organisation invited to a high-level policy discussion on skills in the workplace.
With over 300 approved centres in Hong Kong offering 60 qualifications across a wide range of industrial sectors, ranging from beauty therapy to engineering, City & Guilds is having a positive effect on learners in the region. The Hong Kong office has also forged strong links with a number of corporations in the area, including the Langham Place Hotel, Mongkok. As a result of these efforts, City & Guilds was invited to participate in a policy dialogue, hosted by John Hayes, Minister of State for Further Education, Skills and Lifelong Learning, in July 2011. The forum explored policy and practice in skills training, as well as education in the workplace, in Hong Kong and the UK. The discussion also touched on the challenges and opportunities in ensuring local and international recognition for qualifications globally. This was part of a UK government delegation visit to China and Hong Kong, aimed at enhancing the alliance between China, Hong Kong and the UK in vocational education.
