Availability Advisor April 2012 Introducing the new Cooling

Economizer Mode PUE Calculator New TradeOff Tool removes the mystery of how to sell “free cooling”

Does your customer need to understand the impact of geography and his unique physical plant characteristics on data center PUE, energy cost, and carbon emissions? The Schneider Electric™

Data

Center Science Center has just developed a tool that does the trick. The new Cooling Economizer Mode PUE Calculator is now released as the newest member of the Schneider Electric TradeOff Tool™

family.

These tools are free online and can help you act as trusted advisor during your customer’s data center planning meetings.

Seven different economizer modes are compared in seconds. The Cooling Economizer Mode PUE Calculator consists of just one screen, with one side of the screen for inputs and the other for outputs. The tool compares seven common cooling architectures and calculates their expected annual PUE, energy cost, and carbon emissions. As you input your customer’s data center location, and the characteristics of their power and cooling environment (such as IT inlet temperature, percentage load utilization, and type of power and lighting) results are calculated.

The primary value of the tool, besides process simplification and time savings, is that the various architectures (no economizer mode — which serves as the baseline, two chilled water architectures,

™

one glycol cooled architecture, and three air cooled architectures) are compared relative to one other. So you can determine what’s better for your customer, an air conditioner with direct fresh air and evaporative assist, or a containerized packaged chiller with dry cooler and row-based CRAH? How much will location of your customer’s data center affect which cooling architecture makes the most sense? And what about the impact of the IT operating environment (i.e. ASHRAE recommended vs. ASHRAE allowable)? The Cooling Economizer Mode PUE Calculator tool provides a no-nonsense comparison.

This tool compares seven common cooling architectures and calculates their expected annual PUE, energy cost, and carbon emissions.
