Design engineer – Kamila Orzeszek

Engineering student Kamila Orzeszek left her home city of Warsaw, Poland, for a student exchange programme at Strathclyde University in Glasgow in 2004… and never returned! TalentScotland talks to Kamila about her engineering career at FMC Technologies in Dunfermline and her life in Scotland.

HOW DID YOU COME TO SCOTLAND? I was studying for a Masters in mechanical engineering at Warsaw University of Technology and it had a student exchange programme with Strathclyde University in Glasgow. I took up the opportunity to study in Glasgow and later when Strathclyde offered to let me finish my Masters with them I thought this would be good experience.

HOW DID YOU COME TO WORK FOR FMC? When I graduated in 2006 I was not sure whether I would stay in Scotland or go back to Poland, but I went for job interviews for

the experience. Luckily I saw a job advert on the university’s

careers office for FMC and was particularly interested in the company as it ran its own graduate recruitment programme.

HOW HAVE YOU FOUND LIVING IN SCOTLAND? I live in Dunfermline, where the company is based. It is quiet here and you can escape to the countryside very easily, which is great as I love hill walking. I’ve also enjoyed visiting other parts of Scotland and like the west coast, particularly the Isle of Skye. I’ve found the Scottish people very friendly and

open… I like them so much that I married a Scotsman last year! In fact, I’m so settled here that I can hardly remember what it was like living in Poland!

WHAT IS YOUR ROLE AT NCR? I’m working as a Software Engineer at NCR Software Labs. It’s our role to prove value by creating advanced concepts and technology within the context of NCR’s market. We enhance NCR’s ability to deliver innovation and thought leadership – we are definitely the people paid to think outside the box! When I first joined the company in 2007,

NCR Labs was focusing on how NFC (Near Field

Communication) can be used in a self-service touch point, for example a self-checkout, kiosk or ATM, to enhance and simplify consumer experience. NFC enables consumers to use their mobiles to exchange digital content or cash. This year, one of our areas of focus is cloud-

enabled mobile transaction services. Rather than using their mobile to exchange sensitive information Over-The-Air, consumers would use their mobile together with a service point, such as an ATM, point-of-sale terminal or kiosk to enable secure, transactions over the network using software, data access, and storage resources in “the cloud”.

HOW HAVE YOU FOUND LIVING IN SCOTLAND? I have to admit that I fell in love with Scotland the first time I saw it – the countryside I saw on the coach trip from Edinburgh airport to Dundee was beautiful, and I knew it was a good move for me. It’s easy to get around Scotland – thanks to

the journeyplanner website – and I have seen lots of the countryside and munros (mountains over 3,000ft). I don’t regret coming to Scotland at all and

for those considering it, I would say don’t be scared! I believe there are good prospects for software engineers in Scotland.
