Radar, Digital Fish Finders, AIS, Weather Fax, Sirius Satellite Weather (available only in the US and Canada), IP Cameras, as well as NMEA2000 and FURUNO CAN bus devices. NMEA0183 devices can also be connected using an NMEA0183 to CAN bus converter available from Furuno. Official National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration (NOAA) raster and vector charts are supplied free, as well as bathymetric data for the entire US coastline. Communications Compact Iridium Pilot
solution makes its debut Satellite communications provider Iridium has released its new Iridium Pilot broadband solution, incorporating the group’s Iridium OpenPort service, to simultaneously offer up to three independent phone lines and broadband connectivity, with data speeds of up to 134kbps, to ship and boat crews, on a global basis. Te service comes with a five-year warranty, and is
being pitched primarily at low- and medium-end users, such as fishing vessels, workboats and leisure vessels. Users can arrange pre-paid crew calling services over the three lines, while concurrently receiving crucial safety and navigational data on board the vessel. Iridium Pilot’s capabilities include a built-in firewall
for data traffic management, a firmware notification tool and a bulk configuration capability, to prevent the bandwidth from becoming clogged and losing speed when large volumes of units are involved. Te solution is packaged in a 230mm-high antenna, weighing 11kg, connecting to a below-decks unit measuring 200mm x 250mm and weighing 1.35kg. Te antenna is electronically steerable, to aid connectivity to the Iridium satellite constellation in turbulent weather and rough seas. Speaking at the official launch of the service in
February this year, Joel Tompson, vice president for product management, Iridium, said: “Iridium Pilot will be compatible with Iridium’s next generation constellation, Iridium NEXT,
scheduled for
deployment in 2015. Ship operators installing Iridium Pilot can have the confidence that their equipment will be supported well beyond 2020.”

Engines John Deere initiates EPA
Tier 3 compliance drive Engine manufacturer John Deere Power Systems has confirmed that it is ready to launch US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Tier 3-compliant versions of its PowerTech 4.5litre and 6.8litre marine engines, as well as to launch two brand new Tier 3-compliant engines in advance of the deadline next year. As of January 1 2013, the Tier 3 emissions regulations
will apply to existing versions of the group’s existing PowerTech 4.5litre and 6.8litre engine types. Dave Flaherty, marine marketing manager, comments:
“John Deere integrated features into its Tier 2 marine engines with Tier 3 emissions regulations in mind. As a result, we are able to meet Tier 3 emission regulations with most of our previous engine models by recalibrating our engine soſtware and making minor hardware changes, [with] no additional parts – the engines will have the same look, performance and size, only with a greater reduction in NOx and hydrocarbons.” In terms of new product, John Deere is set to unveil its
4.5litre PowerTech 4045AFM85 engine, to replace the Tier 2-compliant PowerTech 6068TFM75 and 6068TFM76 gen-drive models. Featuring four valves per cylinder, a high pressure common rail and available in keel-cooled or heat-exchanged options, the PowerTech 4045AFM85 will generate up to 168kW, suiting it to workboats, fishing boats and smaller leisure vessels. Additionally, the group’s new PowerTech 4045TFM85
engine is described as a “Tier 3 version” of the existing PowerTech 4045TFM75 gen-drive engine, with the same configurations (1500rpm for 50 Hz and 1800rpm for 60Hz). Te PowerTech 4045TFM85 will deliver 65ekW at 60Hz and feature a two-valve cylinder head. Flaherty also comments that the group is preparing
itself for 2014, when the Tier 3 regulations will affect its 9.0litre and 13.5litre engine lines, and he promises similar upgrades for these models.
