Coatings Hempel offers fast cure for

corrosion Marine coatings manufacturer Hempel has developed an ultra-high solids (96% VS), damp and surface tolerant, fast-cure epoxy coating, Hempadur EM 35740. A very low volatile organic compound (VOC) content

of just 39g/litre makes Hempadur EM 35740 particularly suitable for use in ballast tanks, although it can also be used as a general maintenance primer coating for other areas of the vessel. Te epoxy coating is intended for brush application

with minimum surface preparation and can be applied in damp conditions with 100% relative humidity. Te ability to perform onboard maintenance without having to take a vessel out of service means that downtime is kept to a minimum; this is further aided by the coating’s quick drying time, with treated surfaces immersion-ready in around eight hours at a curing temperature of 20°C. Hempadur EM 35740 is designed to keep ballast

tanks in “GOOD” condition under the latest IMO regulations for maintenance and repair of ballast tank coatings (MSC.1/circ.1330). Te need for costly annual surveys is reduced and fewer repairs are required at next drydocking. Michael Aamodt, group marine product manager

at Hempel, tells Ship & Boat International that one application should protect the damaged area for around two to three years between each drydocking, providing that oil and grease is removed with a suitable detergent from the area and that salts are removed with fresh water.

Hemapdur EM 35740 is available in cans of 2.5litres, resulting in less wastage.

Aamodt says: “As this is a spot repair maintenance

product, we recommend brush application with one-and-a half to two coats wet – in the wet – with a half hour between the coats to reach 300microns dry film thickness.” He adds that the brush application ensures the coating penetrates properly into the steel of the repaired area. While intended for small area application, the brush

quality coating could be applied to an area of around 100m2

of time, says Aamodt. www.hempel.com

Navigation display Furuno launches first multi

touch control display Marine electronics manufacturer Furuno launched its new multi touch-control multifunction display (MFD), NavNet TZtouch, during the Miami International Boat Show in February. Te system represents the first multi touch-control MFD for the marine electronics industry. The touch screen interface is designed to be easy

to navigate and includes a pinch-to-zoom capability, two-finger course rotation and other multi- and single- touch gestures to allow panning and zooming within displays such as charts. Te incorporation of Furuno’s TimeZero technology

facilitates seamless, instantaneous chart redraw. Touch commands that can be used range from drag and drop to custom multi-touch gestures created by the user; and the addition of Furuno’s RotoKey rotary knob allows users to make adjustments, such as range and gain, and menu selections using either RotoKey or the touch screen. Screen options for the TZtouch include a 9inch WVGA

or 14.1inch WXGA display, both with an edge-to-edge glass touch screen, and the addition of polarised, bonded LCD screens ensure readability in all conditions by reducing glare and preventing ‘fog’ from condensation oſten formed in an air gap between the LCD and front cover plate. Users can remotely view and control the TZtouch via a smartphone or tablet using free apps; NavNet Viewer and NavNet Remote can be downloaded from Apple’s App Store. Te Viewer app can be used to view fishing, sailing,

ship, navigation, environment and engine data wirelessly from Apple mobile products, with the option to create custom data screens. Te NavNet Remote app allows remote operation of the TZtouch via an iPad over wireless LAN, when connected to the network (other mobile platforms will be supported in the future). Te NavNet TZtouch is compatible with all of Furuno’s

Ethernet-based network components enabling the user to build their own navigation suite. Up to six displays can be used with the addition of real-time, dual-range UHD
