and infrastructure projects in the region, which will shape Al Gharbia’s development in the coming decades. Although Plan Al Gharbia 2030 is primarily regarded as a development project – which inevitably involves the creation of new buildings, facilities and infrastructure – the aim is to preserve the natural beauty and culture of the region while achieving developmental objectives and economic growth. Te plan considers the future economic and sustainable growth of Abu Dhabi as a whole. In order to focus on specific areas, the region is broken down into the coastal environment – stretching around 350 kilometers from Abu Dhabi in the East to Sila’a in the West, on the border with Saudi Arabia – and the seven prominent settlements: Delma, Ghayathi, Liwa, Madinat Zayed, Mirfa, Ruwais and Sila’a. Te assessment and consultation phase for the creation of ‘Plan Al Gharbia 2030’ began back in 2008. Te Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council (UPC), Western Region Municipality (WRM) and Western Region Development Council (WRDC) led a week-long charrette aimed at tackling the region’s issues and challenges, which involved a multidisciplinary team of stakeholders. Currently, efforts to create the detailed development plan are focused

on consultation and engagement with residents, government entities and other key stakeholders. Following on from the initial charrette, outreach initiatives have been maintained to update and involve individuals and organizations and the UPC has held public consultation sessions. Focusing on developing future plans for individual settlements, and the region as a whole, additional workshops are to be held in the cities of Delma, Ghayathi and Sila’a. Te outcome of these workshops will shape the drafting of detailed sections of Plan Al Gharbia 2030, and will be reviewed by stakeholders before the overall plan is finalized and communicated. At present, 10 percent of the Emirate’s population resides in the Western


Region, with the most populous areas being Ruwais and Madinat Zayed. One of the overarching aims of Plan Al Gharbia 2030 is to reduce out- migration of the local population from the region, by improving opportunities for Emiratis to study and work locally. In addition, there will be a need to improve and provide additional community, residential, retail and business facilities and amenities to region’s population, which is expected to grow and benefit from an increasing number of expatriates taking up residence in Al Gharbia’s main settlements.
