The Charles Edgar Hoyt Memorial Lecture, Presenter: John Campbell, Univ. of Birmingham, Birmingham, U.K.

According to Campbell, the ne-

cessity to stop the pouring of liquid metals is urgent. In his lecture, "Stop Pouring; Start Casting," he will dis- cuss how pouring is the main source of entrained bifilms, which are the mechanisms which initiate all familiar casting problems, including porosity, hot tears, low mechanical properties, corrosion initiation, etc. As dislocations explain plasticity, bifilms explain pore and fracture initiation. Campbell contends only when pouring is eliminated will casting processes achieve their potential to deliver routinely sound and reliable parts. Although not widely realized, evidence for massive benefits from bifilm-free metals already exists in the Aluminum alloy and Nickel alloy casting industries. Te groundwork is in place for a historical revolution in the casting industry.

John Campbell will present the Hoyt Memorial Lecture.

Tis session, "State of Metalcasting - Forecasting Sales, Raw

Material Supply," will provide a look at the current state of the U.S. metalcasting industry, with insights into the economic recovery and critical supply issues of scrap metal and molding sand availability. While the industry continues to recover from the recession, the forecast looks bright. Presenters will discuss the state of metal supply, including current supply, where we are headed in the near future and why prices fluctuate. Tis presentation will provide an understanding of what influences the cost of scrap and virgin metals and what the metalcasting industry can do. Te session will also include a presentation on the current supply issues relating to molding sand. With demand on the rise and supply shrinking, speakers will dis- cuss how the molding sand situation will affect metalcasters.

Event Highlights Thursday, April 19 – 10:15 a.m.
