TRASH COLLECTORS T

HOW A FLOATING TV INSPIRED

A GRASSROOTS MOVEMENT BY PAUL LEBOWITZ

hree TVs, a canoe load of bald tires, one busted steel-hull boat and another thousand pounds of trashy clutter. All of it collected in a short time by paddlers hailing from

all 50 U.S. states and 20 countries, documented in photographs sent to the grassroots Out of Sight, Out of Mind never-ending clean-up contest. It’s a drop in the trashcan, but every scrap is one less mucking up waterways. “Small

actions have a big impact,” says Jason Self. Self started the project with fellow Portland, Oregon, paddlers Chris Bensch and Shay Bickley. The trio encounters trash every time they’re on the water. At first, “We didn’t always pick it up. We’d go home and feel guilty about it,” Self says.

That’s changed. Once they fished a floating TV out of the water, it became a game, a chal- lenge to see who’d get the most. “We asked ourselves, how do we motivate other people to do the same thing?” says

Self. They hit upon a simple idea, a monthly photo contest hosted at a repurposed Face- book page (Facebook.com/GulfKayak), and went shopping for sponsors. Keen Footwear and Kokatat donated shoes and PFDs. Ibex and Alder Creek chipped in. Then the trio worked the phones, email and their Facebook friends to get the word spreading. “We kept it simple and easy. Post a picture of the removal and proper disposal of trash

from any waterway using any human paddled craft. The person who picks up the most that month wins the prize. No logistics, nothing financial, just doing it,” Self says. The project has received more than 80 photo submissions, some representing the

work of large groups. Kayak anglers pitched in with gusto, particularly those in the southeast. “We thought it would be all hippies on the west coast,” Self says with a laugh. Captain Linda Cavitt, president of the Panama City Kayak Fishing Association, says

Out of Sight, Out of Mind inspired action. Not just for herself, but for the next genera- tion. “We need to respect the water and everything that makes a home in and around it. Living on the Gulf Coast and having direct impact from the BP oil spill really made me appreciate where I live and not to take it for granted,” she says. Her words resonate with Self. “People toss stuff without thinking of the numbers. One

bottle, what’s the problem? If one person out of 1,000 in a city of three million tosses one bag or bottle on the ground every day for a year, it adds up to 1,000,095 plastic items in the ocean. The more people we get to think about this, the more we’ll get people to change their habits. It really does add up.”
