This renowned section of the Ottawa is part of the Main Channel, which has hosted several whitewater competitions including two World Freestyle Championships. “This picture shows the action and fantastic big-water features of the Ottawa,” says Jez Blanchard who is performing a downriver wave wheel in a C1 in the image.

Matthews shot this photo in the summer on a 400-km, 21-day canoe trip from Red Lake, Ontario, to Lake Winnipeg. “Gail and Brian Shields are enjoying one of the Bloodvein’s many rapids— there are somewhere between 80 and 100,” says Matthews. “The image picks up some of the red rock that gives the river its name.”
