OTTAWA LOCKS, RIDEAU CANAL NATIONAL historic site, ottawa, oN • DesigNateD 2000
These flight locks mark the end of the canal, dropping 115 feet into the Ottawa River beside the parliament buildings. Matthews and his wife paddled the entire 200-kilometer Rideau. “I asked a group of friends to join us at the last set of locks,” he says. “Reading the history and physically paddling those miles gave us a strong connection to the waterway.”
3rd Place JASON KURUC C A NMOR E , AB
SOUTH NAHANNI RIVER, NAHANNI NATIONAL Park reserve, Nwt • DesigNateD 1987
After climbing Sunblood Mountain, Kuruc, a northern river guide, captured this surreal view of the Nahanni using the fisheye setting on his camera. “I was trying to break away from the traditional summit shot and see the river and physical features of the mountain from a different perspective,” he says.
