Upfront
Good sport!
Congratulations to NUT member Martin Reay, a PE teacher at Budehaven Community School in Cornwall. He was one of three finalists in Sky Sports’ Living for Sport Teacher of the Year 2011 for his outstanding commitment and initiative in motivating and inspiring his students.
Martin has been solely responsible for implementing the project in his school, running after-school activities including cycling, surfing and martial arts. He has helped the development of a range of pupils with diverse needs, making an invaluable impact on their education and life skills.
This year’s project has been based on beach lifesaving, making the most of the school’s coastal resources while providing students with the skills required for future local employment opportunities.
Martin created good links with local businesses. Surf board shapers, lifeguards, surf instructors and surf shop owners all provide support and free equipment to the school.
Pick up a penguin!
NUT rep Julie Glover and her colleagues at West Meadows Primary School in Barnsley were thrilled to win a series of mosaic animal sculptures using recycled glass in a competition. These were displayed at exhibitions around the UK last year before the organisers invited bids to give the sculptures permanent homes.
“We have a Wild Walk area at school which is untended, apart from a path mown from one end to the other. The area has grass, trees, bushes, seating areas and willow shelters and is used by the whole school, but mainly by children in the Foundation Stage. My bid for the penguins explained how they would be a real asset,” Julie explained.
A public vote on the Facebook page of Kenco, the organisers of the competition, chose the West Meadows’ bid. The penguins were installed in the Wild Walk in November. “They are much the same height as our youngest pupils and the children adore them,” said Julie.
Happy birthday Nan!
Manchester Teachers’ Association honoured retired member Anne Brown who celebrated her 100th birthday on 13 December at the nursing home where she now lives.
Celebrating with her were 51 members of her family and friends Laurien O’Brien and Brenda Lomas from the Manchester Retired Teachers’ Section. The association presented Nan with a basket of flowers. General Secretary Christine Blower also sent her a congratulatory letter.
Nan served many happy years at Old Moat Primary School in Manchester. She was an active NUT member and until last year was a regular attender at the retired section’s monthly meetings.
Shakespeare’s Queen Elizabeth the Second
The NUT in London is working with Equity members who have produced a play called Shakespeare’s Queen Elizabeth the Second as part of the cultural Olympiad in July 2012.
The play is a mix of historical verse, song and dance. It is hoped schools round the country will perform the play on or near the Jubilee weekend, beginning 2 June.
For details and to download the play free, email Anne Mallach at
