soſtware for off-site fabrication of building elements. Traditionally active in the automotive

With a BIM authoring tool, instead of drawing lines and arcs, you work with parameterised objects

before actually building anything. In this way we can analyse more sophisticated aspects of buildings and operations to maximise energy efficiency, acoustics, etc. In short, BIM soſtware focuses on helping enterprises make a better infrastructure rather than helping an individual do something faster. Large organisations and governments have

recognised the advantages of BIM and are encouraging its use. In the UK, for instance, the Government Construction Strategy[2] states that the ‘Government will require

and aerospace markets, Dassault Systèmes is starting to make its move into the growing BIM market with the Dassault Systèmes CATIA Digital Project soſtware. Tis is an interesting step given that the company was an investor in Revit Technology Corp. before it was acquired by Autodesk in 2002. Behind Digital Project is the CATIA V5 geometry and information management engine, and the product line is packaged as a scaled set of base products with levels of functionality appropriate to different players on a construction team. Products include Designer, Foundation, Viewer+, Systems Routing (MEP), Knowledge Template for developing libraries and Knowledge Advisor, which provides real-time rules and checks that can be built into intelligent component libraries. Tese latter products make a good segue

into the second class of soſtware, which addresses collaboration. Models from various disciplines are combined into a master model

fully-collaborative 3D BIM (with all project and asset information, documentation and data being electronic) as a minimum by 2016.’ In addition, such 3D designs have been designated as ‘current best practice’ in recent court cases, notes Eastman.

Classes of BIM software When looking to follow the BIM philosophy, you’ll encounter two primary classes of soſtware. First are authoring tools, where you create the model and the corresponding database. Here you’ll find a variety of tools optimised for various specialities in the design process. For example, Autodesk sells three versions of its Revit soſtware: Revit Architecture, Revit Structure and Revit MEP (mechanical, electrical, plumbing for building services). Each has different component libraries and analysis routines. Each also has its own graphical editor, but for very detailed work some users might prefer AutoCAD – and so Autodesk also sells these BIM tools in a bundle that includes AutoCAD and other packages such as those which support high- end animations with special effects. Users can also utilise other Autodesk products such as Green Building Studio for sustainability analyses or even the firm’s manufacturing

where it becomes possible, for example, to perform clash detection or advanced analyses. Coordination among disciplines has always been a big issue, notes Huw Roberts at Bentley. ‘During the design, construction and operation of buildings there are guaranteed to be lots of specialities. Tey all need information from each other and need lots of information to make decisions. And with that many people and that much information, it’s a given that there will be issues,’ he comments. To address collaboration issues, Autodesk

sells Navisworks. Te soſtware provides a set of integration, analysis, and communication tools to help teams better coordinate disciplines, resolve conflicts and plan projects before construction or renovation begins. Another similar product is Bentley Navigator, which infrastructure teams use to review and analyse project information. Te supplier believes a key advantage of Navigator is that with some other product families you must first convert all files into a common format, with a possible loss of information in doing so, and that you can’t always return data easily from the common project to individual disciplines. Navigator, in contrast, provides a dynamic closed loop during the design / review / design process.
