HIGH-PERFORMANCE COMPUTING

Predictions for the European Software Industry in 2012

to be the year for the big data road map. The four-v definition — defined as high volume, high variety, high velocity and high value data — is now widely understood and accepted within the industry, however defining what exactly constitutes Big Data presents a challenge.

International Data Corporation (IDC) is predicting that Big Data and the consumerisation of IT will all leave their footprint on the European software industry, which is expected to experience moderate growth of 3.1 per cent in 2012. Last year, IDC predicted that Big Data would push the limits of data management. This year is believed

IDC defines it in terms of specific data volumes, rates of increase and speed, as well as in a broader sense of enabling people to do what they previously could not attempt, from data that had not been accessible. Speaking to Scientific Computing

World, Jane Doorly, VP software and services group at IDC, commented that while the scientific community had been the chief generators and analysers of large amounts of data, both structured and unstructured, it had essentially been the ‘poor relation’ with regards to having the

tools or sometimes the technology to address the analytics side of things. ‘But,’ she said, ‘the issues of storing, managing and analysing Big Data have now become a focus for the whole computing industry and that’s going to be a big support to the high- performance computing community in the scientific space.

‘I imagine that some of these tools

will start to become mainstream and much of the high-performance computing Big Data work is going to exploit some of the more established approaches based on existing numerical modelling and simulation. The whole community is going to start looking at the efficiency of new approaches, even in areas such as large-scale graph analytics or semantic technologies, and as a result some of the algorithms are going to be revolutionised,’ added Doorly.

SCIENTIFIC COMPUTING WORLD AND INSIDEHPC ANNOUNCE COLLABORATIVE AGREEMENT

Scientific Computing World and insideHPC are happy to announce that they have reached agreement on a cross-publishing collaboration. The two publications will exchange selected content, ensuring their respective audiences benefit from a broad range and style of industry news and features. Scientific Computing World

(SCW) is the only global publication dedicated to the computing and information technology needs of professionals working in science, engineering and medicine. Its publisher, Dr Tom Wilkie, said: ‘We are really pleased to have agreed this link-up with insideHPC, a publication

which we greatly respect. The agreement will allow a wider audience for SCW’s features and analysis, while allowing us to benefit from insideHPC’s news reporting focus. We believe this will improve still further the service that we can deliver to our readers.’ ‘Our readership is largely

supercomputer users that look to us to provide HPC news without the noise,’ added Rich Brueckner, president of insideHPC. ‘Not only does Scientific Computing World have great technical content for us to share with our readers, SCW has an expansive readership in Europe that will enable us to reach more

scientists and engineers on a global basis.’

insideHPC is one of the most popular news and information portals for global stakeholders interested in high-performance computing, supercomputing and emerging high-end computing technologies. Each month, insideHPC serves up close to one million page views to a highly targeted, dedicated following of supercomputing and HPC professionals. As the flagship publication of the inside* family of online news portals, insideHPC is now joined by inside-BigData, inside- Cloud, and inside-Startups. For more information, visit insideHPC.com
