Crest or Colgate?
By now I’m certain most of you have read my column in The Paper and probably have gotten pretty bored with learning about which whitening system is best for you, what the latest and great- est crown or filling material is, or how lasers control gum disease. But today, I’ve got something entirely new for you. It affects all of us but, like cancer, it’s been growing for a long time, until it’s almost too late.
Recently, our practice has noticed a large increase in the number of supplies offered to us from China at some significant savings. Now they’re “flooding the market!” As a business, we’ve welcomed the

patients and most come from the U.S., Germany, Great Britain, France, Japan, and Korea. Over the last couple years we’ve saved money purchasing some Chinese products, they usually are cheap- er but we relearned the old adage, “You get what you paid for!” We discontinued and returned those lacking quality right away, and found some companies didn’t “back their product.” Some were good quality, but non were supe- rior to the US or other countries. So … what’s this got to do with Crest and Colgate you ask?
opportunity to save money when the qual- ity of the product was equal to or greater than what we were currently using. In fact, last week a large dental supplies compa- ny representative actu- ally complimented us for the high quality of materials we use. We spend time scrutiniz- ing which materials are best for our
Most good dentists encourage their patients to have their regu- lar checkups and cleanings, and after we’re done we usually give you a “hygiene package,” contain- ing toothpaste, a brush, floss, and sometimes a tongue scrapper. We’ve been doing this for years and buy these products in bulk to
save on expenses. Several years ago we were offered a “discounted” fee by our largest dental supplier if we bought Colgate in bulk quantities. Ever since we’ve received their shipments and paid the bill automatically, just like the sun rising and setting. Well, we just found out that our Colgate is now made in CHINA!
With our country in financial dire straights and unemployment so high, I finally realized I’d been indifferent to my fellow Americans too long! I “ordered” my supplies coordinator, Sonia, to find an AMERICAN company who could provide “hygiene pack- ages” for our patients because I was “mad as hell and wasn’t going to take it anymore!” She called our representative for this large dental supply company and the represen- tative told Sonia that, “There are no companies in the U.S. that can match our price!” Guess What… SHE WAS WRONG!
Crest is located in Ohio and our new “care package” to our patients is coming from NORTH CAR- OLINA! How much more are we paying? “ZERO$.” That’s right, it’s costing us exactly the same! So, what’s the catch? Does the dental supply company selling us Colgate make more profit provid- ing us with Colgate? Were they unaware of what Crest had to offer (somehow doubtful don’t
you think)? Frankly, what the catch is doesn’t matter! The Point is our fellow Americans are “employed” in “jobs” producing CREST! Both Crest and Colgate make good products in the USA, but right now our countrymen and women need “jobs” so… as far as we’re concerned, we can pro- vide our patients with a high qual- ity product AND support our fel- low Americans by buying Crest’s Toothpaste instead of Colgate’s.
I’m now having Sonia review all our purchases, and although there may be a few materials we’ll still have to purchase from China and other countries, if there’s a prod- uct made in the USA and the cost is close, we’re buying from that company! Jobs here at home are more important than the “extra profit margins” being made by investors of companies who’ve moved their factories to China and other countries because of their cheaper labor.
Yes, we all know that there are some products from other coun- tries whose quality is superior, but they are few and far between… and when it’s a wash, we want our neighbors to have the opportunity to live a good life because, in the end “we’re all in the same boat” when it comes to living together in the USA, and how our neighbors are doing affects all of us… even if they’re on the other side of the country!

President Theodore Roosevelt
'In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin.
But this is predicated upon the per- son's becoming in every facet an American and nothing but an American ... There can be no divid- ed allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but some- thing else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag ... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language ... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.'
