Mark and Rose Watson live near the Loxahatchee, on the dirt road on which Trapper used to go for supplies. They claim to have seen him at least a half-dozen times. And Rose Watson speaks from first-hand knowledge ... because she knew him.


When she was little, her older brother used to take her along when he rowed upriver to visit Trapper.


"My brother Buddy was 20 years older than me," Watson says. "And he and Trapper were good friends. After they put me to sleep, they would sit up most of the night talking by candlelight. I remem- ber all the animals Trapper kept there. And I remember he was a huge man – especially to a little girl. I never saw him with a shirt on. And I don't remember him wearing shoes."


One night several years back, while she and Mark were watch- ing TV, Rose suddenly felt goosebumps on the back of her neck. She didn't think anything of it at the time. But a month later, it happened again. This time, she turned around, toward the sliding glass door in the rear.


And she saw Trapper Nelson. "I saw him clearly," she says. "A big man, with the outline of the face I remembered from child- hood. There was – I don't know how else to say it – sort of an aura around him. He was moving back and forth, side to side, as if he was trying to see inside."


She heard him, too. "I heard him running down the old path he used to take for sup- plies," she says. "Then I'd hear the footsteps stop, when he was looking inside the house. And then I'd hear him take off again.


"I saw him clearly," Rose Watson says. "There's no doubt in my mind. It was as real as it could possibly be!"

In 1970 the State paid $1.3 mil- lion to Nelson’s nephew to add all 857 acres to Jonathan Dickinson State Park.


Trapper Nelson's cabin is locat- ed inside Jonathan Dickinson State Park (www.floridas- tateparks.org; 772-546-2771) in the town of Hobe Sound, about 30 miles north of West Palm Beach. There are no roads; the cabin is accessible only by boat. You can rent a canoe or kayak, and make the trip using your own power, or you can hop a ride on the Loxahatchee Queen, a 25-person, covered tour-boat that makes several trips a day (weather and tides permitting).


History and Culture


The 11,500-acre park is named for Jonathan Dickinson, a Quaker merchant whose vessel shipwrecked nearby in 1696. During World War II, the land the park now occupies was home to Camp Murphy, a top- secret radar training school with over 6,600 men.

A pleasant surprise "There's a very cool tour to take if you like nature and you really want to relax. I'd start by hitting the beach at Carlin Park in the morning, grab some breakfast at the café, then head to the park to take the


tour to Trapper Nelson's." At the entrance of the park we were given a pamphlet with a map of the park and informa- tion about the nature and the animals inhabiting the park. We found ourselves surrounded by the native Florida forest of this preserved park land, thick with shade and sun filtered photo opportunities. Once at the con- cession stand, we had no trouble buying our tickets for the pon- toon boat ride to the historic Trapper Nelson's Cabin. Luckily, the tides were just right for the morning boat ride.


Seated comfortably in the pon- toon boat, we cruised the man- grove infused water while a bright sun danced sparkles on the water's surface. This gave a silver lining to the waxy leaves of the mangroves anchored into the edge of the waterway by their curved and intricate root systems. The Captain of the boat narrated as we passed peacefully along the winding path of the river. He explained that not long ago, the only way that people traveled the region at all was by the water. Children, in the early 1900's, traveled by boat to go to school in West Palm Beach. We saw
