opportunity to assess real TV broadcasts and apply what they see on TV to their own broadcasts at school.
This didn’t happen overnight. There are specific jobs created for the class, and the possibilities based on your own specific needs are endless. The jobs for our broadcast class included producer, computer, sound and light technician, and announcers. -
The producers create the script for the day, input the script into the VC3, get the VC3 set up for use by the computer technician, conduct rehearsal and assist with creative input.
-
The computer technician (one of the favorite jobs of my students) involves the actual use of VC3 and decides the opening screens, audio, title overlays, backgrounds, speed of the teleprompter, runs the teleprompter, determines the go for live production and finalizes the recorded announcements for upload to the website.
- -
The sound and light technician is equally important, but not as demanding, as the student running sound and light needs to ensure the announcers can be heard in the classroom. They also ensure that the light is set up for the best look.
Announcing includes the actual delivery of the live announcements by reading the teleprompter. The jobs rotate every two weeks so everyone has a chance to do each of the jobs and go back and do some of their favorite jobs later. At the end of the trimester the students create a written
script for their own VC3 video production about their experience and explain the jobs they participated in. These are shared with the next trimester’s class and are used as an evaluation of the students’ experience and proficiency of the program. The purchase of this package took broadcasting in our school community to a new level and allows students the opportunity to learn about green screen technology and the future opportunity that these skills afford. Students are able to take ownership of the program and learn to use it with little teacher intervention.
Our class also included career exploration by taking a group TV studio tour of the local Channel 7 WDVD station with meteorologist Dave Rexroth – a huge highlight for all students involved! It was an added bonus to watch these seventh and eighth graders progress from sometime shy and insecure participants to outgoing and lively participants. They fine-tuned their announcing and reading skills, as well as technology knowledge and trouble shooting skills. The class also required students to work together as a team producing a product that everyone in our building viewed daily. This created a class that was unique, exciting to participate in, and gave the students a place to flourish.
