Tips for Using Glogster with Kids

I (and my students) have been fans of Glogster at http://edu. glogster.com for years and we’ve watched it grow from a ‘gee- whiz-how-can-I-use-this’ new tool to a classroom standard for creatively presenting information. For those not familiar with Glogster – it’s an online interactive poster that can contain text, images, video, and voice. Unfortunately, over the years, Glogster has decided it would really like/need your money to be able to use this online resource, so it has been slowly limiting what you can do with the Basic (free) version. However, I have found Glogster to still be a wonderful, easy resource to use with students, even with its current limited version. With a few pre-project considerations, you and your students can have a wonderful, educational adventure with Glogster EDU!

Storyboard It First

Students MUST have all their research or ideas down on paper (revised and edited, of course) and all images in one folder before they get on the computer to create their Glog. I often set

up templates for students to fill in with their information. These templates might be a Word doc with a table in which each cell contains a heading for each project requirement or a mind map with all project components (e.g. https://bubbl.us) or even a simple outline of what their project must include. This should also help minimize spelling errors (look for those wavy red lines!)

When saving images, an easy way to ‘cite’ those pictures is to copy and paste the image into either MS Paint or PowerPoint (resize to fit the whole slide), add a text box at the bottom of the image which contains the URL of that picture, and save as a .jpg file. That way, the URL becomes part of the picture, so it’s always cited!

Go to http://edu.glogster.com. Click on Choose Account Level – you want the Single Free account (unless you still have classroom money to spend on the Teacher Light version). Make sure you are on the Teacher tab.

Once you register, you’ll receive a Teacher Code (on your Dashboard) to give to students when they register. This will allow them to register without an email (yay!) and if you locate money later to be able to upgrade to the Teacher Light version, your students will be connected to your account.

Students must register themselves (or you can spend some time registering each student). I suggest students use their network
