● Eaton Rapids High School presented their in-house print shop. Students in Digital Imaging and Graphic Design courses create posters, T-shirts, and promotional items for athletic teams and other school organizations. The results are professional level, high quality items; the experience of creating them is a point of pride for students and has direct applications for students’ careers after high school.

● Lenawee Intermediate School District, with teacher Kelly Kiggins, showed an array of iPad and iTouch applications for students with disabilities. Briana, a high school student, showed how she uses Pictello for social stories. For students with disabilities, iPads and iPod Touches offer portability and inexpensive apps that make a world of difference.


● Fourth graders from Douglas Road Elementary displayed their Mystery Skype activity. Classrooms connect using Skype’s video chat feature. They give each other clues and


The students participating in this event provide a voice for all of Michigan’s school students. As they share their projects, they are educating their elected representatives regarding the importance of technology use at school. The hope that these students have is that the policies that are enacted by legislators during their elected terms will be made with a deeper understanding of the role that technology plays when in the hands of students during the learning process.


Pam Shoemaker, Ed.S is the MACUL Advocacy committee chairperson and serves as the Instructional Technology Coordinator for Walled Lake Consolidated Schools. She is a recent graduate of the MI Educational Policy Fellowship Program.


Jon Margerum-Leys, Ph.D. is a member of the MACUL Advocacy committee. He is currently serving as Interim Associate Dean for Students and Curriculum at Eastern Michigan University, where he is also a professor of Educational Media and Technology.
