environmental approval for a 230 hectare mine the proposed eerstelingsfontein open cast coal mine in mpumalanga in south africa will have a total footprint of approximately 230 hectares with an estimated 2.4 million tonnes of coal to be mined during a 2 year life span. exxaro appointed wsp to fulfil the role of independent environmental assessment practitioner to facilitate the environmental authorisation process for the mine. this involves a comprehensive specialist scope of services including terrestrial and aquatic ecology, surface water, groundwater, air quality, noise, heritage visual impact, socio-economic, blast and vibration, traffic and closure and rehabilitation.
