UTAH'S REGIONS

UTAH: OUT & ABOUT

Salt Lake City NORTH UTAH

Salt Lake City, Utah’s capital and largest city, lies between the slopes of the soaring Wasatch Mountains and the Great Salt Lake. Combining the vibrancy of a major metropolitan area with the friendliness of a small, western city, Salt Lake features unparalleled access to recreation, great shopping, dynamic nightlife, and Utah's ‘Greatest Snow on Earth®’. Founded in the mid-1800s by the Mormon

pioneers, Salt Lake rapidly grew into one of the West’s most-important commercial and transportation centres, yet it still retains much of the fl avour and charm of the Old West. Its historic downtown is fi lled with parks, galleries, restaurants, pubs and shops. Temple Square, the city’s tree-lined centre, is home to numerous attractions, including the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, Salt Lake Temple, Family History Library and several museums featuring early pioneer life. Rising across the street from Temple Square

is City Creek, a large luxury mall, residential, offi ce and retail complex.

Natural History Museum of Utah The expansion of Salt Lake City’s Lightrail

System (TRAX) will allow visitors to travel to the heart of Salt Lake from the Salt Lake City International Airport in just 10 minutes to make arriving in and exploring the city centre easy. The Visit Salt Lake Connect Pass provides access to the area’s most-famous attractions. www.visitsaltlake.com/visit/connectpass The Natural History Museum of Utah,

in its new home, the Rio Tinto Center, has greatly expanded. This architectural icon can now exhibit thousands of previously- unseen artefacts from Utah’s history and prehistory. Nine themed galleries allow a hands-on approach to dinosaur fossils, plants, minerals and archaeological artefacts. www.nhmu.utah.edu Salt Lake City is an easy connection from

Europe, Asia and all of North America and is the closest major gateway for access to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks in the state of Wyoming. West of Salt Lake City, the Bonneville Salt

Flats, home of the World of Speed races, attracts speed freaks from around the world, as does the neighbouring Miller Motorsports Park. Antelope Island State Park, to the north, is the largest island on the Great Salt Lake. It is home to free-roaming bison, bighorn sheep, deer and pronghorn antelope. Sandy beaches provide great access to the lake. The visitor centre features information about the island’s history, geology and biology. An ideal bed base for Antelope Island is Davis County, which is also

home to Lagoon Amusement Park and a wide selection of hotels and restaurants. To the north, Ogden is a thriving community

of historic character, founded as the two halves of the transcontinental railway were joined at nearby Promontory in 1869. Historic 25th Street and the Union Station are highlights. Brigham City has many historic buildings and is the gateway to one of America's best bird refuges, the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge. Nearby is Golden Spike National Historic Site. Nestled in scenic Cache Valley, Logan was a

wilderness gathering-place for early mountain men and fur trappers and, today, is home to the American West Heritage Center and classic examples of early Mormon architecture. Drive Logan Canyon Scenic Byway to the breathtaking turquoise waters of Bear Lake to experience the “Caribbean of the Rockies” on your way to Yellowstone. Of all the cities in Utah, Park City is probably

best known for its resorts. The base for the US Olympic training facility and site of several alpine Olympic events in 2002, Park City retains much of its early frontier character. Historic Main Street is lined with restaurants, clubs and bars, as well as art galleries and speciality shops. Heber Valley and Utah Valley are home to

some of the fi nest fl y-fi shing in the world, great golf, a historic railroad, Sundance Resort, rafting and endless hiking paths in the Uinta-Wasatch- Cache National Forest. Thanksgiving Point houses the Museum of Ancient Life, one of the largest dinosaur museums of its kind.
