OPENING WOUNDS
There are some that will tell you 2012 is the year it will end. We’ve all heard the stories of earthquakes, volcanoes, floods, and every other manner of disaster, both natural and manmade. There was even a documentary made about it starring John Cusack (that was a documentary, right?). But for FM, this year brings us many opportunities to celebrate some of the great moments in the history of monsters. In May of this year, one of horror’s greatest living legends—Sir Christopher Lee—will turn 90. He’ll celebrate by appearing in the upcoming DARK SHADOWS adaptation from Tim Burton, and filming three movies: two HOBBIT films from Peter Jackson and the big screen adaptation of Pascal Mercier’s bestselling novel NIGHT TRAIN TO LISBON. It is with great honor and affection that we take a look back at the career of one of horror’s greatest icons, Hammer’s Dracula. 2012 also sees two other birthdays of a slightly different nature. This year, two of literature’s greatest heroes turn 100: John Carter of Mars and Tarzan. With Disney planning to release its big screen, big budget version of JOHN CARTER next month, we thought we’d take the opportunity to revisit the life and times of author Edgar Rice Burroughs, whose action-filled tomes entertained millions and made him one of the few authors of his era to actually enjoy the fruits of his labor, setting up his massive estate—Tarzana—no more than an easy 5-iron from where I sit writing these very words. As an added bonus, deep in the Ack-ives we uncovered an interview that Forry conducted with Mr. Burroughs in 1948—a rare treat to experience two of Sci-Fi’s biggest legends in their own words.
This year also brings us several films based on the works of Edgar Allan Poe, arguably the single biggest influence over all of contemporary horror literature. And they couldn’t come at a more critical time, with the Poe House in Baltimore teetering on the brink of extinction. Read ahead and find out how you can help to preserve this amazing piece of history. With so much to celebrate and so many surprises around the corner, 2012 is truly the year of the Ack-pocalypse!
