Caterpillar unveils C175-16


Caterpillar has launched a new marine propulsion engine, the C175-16, primarily designed to meet IMO Tier II, and, in the future, US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Tier 4, emissions requirements. The C175 is rated at 2201-2168bKW at 1600rpm


and 2550bKWat 1800rpm maximum, and makes use of Caterpillar’s ACERT technology to optimise turbocharging and aſtercooling for a favourable power output. Te engine also features the Cat common rail fuel system, to meet the low emissions levels specified by IMO Tier II and expected for EPA Tier 4, as well as thermo-laminated heat shields. Te group claims that the C175 boasts an oil change interval of 1000 hours.

Sponge-encased low-dust blasting


UK-based EnviraSponge is a new venture set up to reduce the amount of dust typically incurred by surface cleaning and grit-blasting operations. The group’s same-titled product comprises abrasives impregnated into a sponge casing, which sales and marketing manager Ian Robson likened to a ‘sandpaper’ principle. When the product is propelled against a surface, the sponge flattens, exposing the abrasive which then cleans the surface. Upon rebound, the sponge expands and returns to its original shape, thereby capturing the resultant dust particles. EnviraSponge creates a surface profile of 5-100microns on steel. could reduce dust by 90% over conventional grit blasting products, granting operators advantages such as greater visibility, resulting in less need for re-work. www.envirasponge.com

Te engine measures 5.5m in length, 1.86m in width


and 2.48m in height, and weighs nearly 14.4tonnes. Speaking at the engine’s launch, Caterpillar explained that selective catalyst reduction (SCR) – the process of injecting urea into hot engines, to reduce NOx levels – will comprise the group’s “prime path” for its IMO Tier III- / EPA Tier 4-compliant engines, namely the C175, 3500 and C280. www.marine.cat.com

New hoist for Great Lakes


Marine Traveliſt has supplied the Ohio, US-based Great Lakes Towing Company with its largest mobile boat hoist to date, in the form of the 770tonne Marine Traveliſt 700C hoist. Te hoist is intended to grant the Great Lakes Shipyard the ability to construct and repair more than 10 vessels simultaneously, enabling the facility to handle emergency repairs and maintain tight delivery schedules, as well as effectively doubling the liſting capacity of the

Trident Sensors has released a pocket-sized tracking device, monikered TRIG, which, when used over the Iridium satellite network, is capable of transmitting accurate GPS positions, messages and data, at predetermined intervals, to selected email addresses, mobile phones, websites and remote stations. Although the unit is intended to be used by seafarers and offshore workers operating in remote locations, it can also be affixed to vessels, containers and ocean buoys, to keep operators up to speed on the object’s precise location, as well as prevailing factors such as temperature and pressure. Te TRIG, which weighs 265grams, is certified as dust-


and waterproof to IP68 standard, and features Bluetooth, theoretically enabling data and messages to be sent to and from any global location. In addition, users can call for help by activating a push button.
