egypt’s Golf / Diving / Spas

Tees, turtles and treatments

Egypt is a whole lot more than beautiful beaches and an unsurpassed history. Holidaymakers have a host of alternatives including golf, diving, snorkelling and spas

Golf

Experience a fantastic way to say ‘fore!’ Golf in Egypt started as long ago as the late 1800s with the opening of the Mena House Oberoi Golf Course in Cairo that has the amazing wow factor of overlooking the pyramids. The 18-hole golf course is open to outside visitors. The sport has experienced a boom over the last decade and there are now 20 courses spread around the country. With no shortage of sun or sand for bunkers it’s easy to see why Egypt is developing as a top golf destination and the Egyptian Open is now an official event in the European Challenge Tour. The four main courses are Maritim Jolie

Ville Golf, on the coast north of Sharm el Sheikh; El Gouna, with spectacular views over the surrounding mountains; Dreamland, set against a tranquil backdrop of lakes and palm trees outside Cairo; and the desert course of Taba Heights, next to the Red Sea. The Gary Player-designed Cascades at Soma Bay Golf & Country Club, a championship course on the Red Sea, also welcomes guests who have a handicap of at least 36.

There are also two courses along Egypt’s Mediterranean coast, the fairly new one at Porto Marina and the Alexandria Sporting Club, which dates back to 1898.

Diving

Showcasing the country’s longest stretch of coastline and stunning underwater reefs abundant with marine life, the Red Sea is a paradise for both divers and snorkellers. Rated as one of the world’s top diving destinations the narrow strip of water between Africa and the Asian Peninsula is home to 1,100 species of fish, 1,000 varieties of invertebrates, turtles and more than 200 types of soft and hard coral. This enormous biodiversity is thanks to the Red Sea being almost totally surrounded by desert on all sides giving it an unusually high salt content
