egypt’s Sham el Sheikh
Dream destination T
he sand, sea, scenery and fantastic hotels, shopping and attractions of Sharm el Sheikh provide everything you could want for a dream holiday. It’s hardly surprising the resort that pioneered Red Sea tourism has grown into Egypt’s largest and best-known beach holiday destination. Heading the resorts that developed along the Sinai Peninsula on the western coast of the Red Sea, it’s situated on the southernmost tip. Sharm, as it’s often called, is a lively, cosmopolitan destination packed with restaurants,
bars and nightclubs as well as plenty to do during the day for families with small children. There are many safe beaches and pools plus camel rides, quad biking, watersports and a host of fun activities for older youngsters and parents. It’s a top spot for newcomers to learn snorkelling and diving, offering easy access to one of the world’s greatest natural aquariums.
Spread across three distinct districts, the heart of Sharm is Naama Bay. With a sandy beach lining the horseshoe-shaped bay it also boasts most of Sharm’s nightlife and a wide selection of big- brand shops and is popular with families, couples and singles alike. The original settlement of Old Sharm, to the south, is where dive boats anchor and pleasure craft offer day trips to Ras Mohammed National Park, fringed with coral reefs, and the Straits of Tiran. This area is also

home to the Old Market, Sharm’s only traditional Egyptian souk. Further north Sharks Bay and White Knight Bay are long strips lined with international four- and five-star hotels.
The Ten Commandments Sharm is well placed for trips to the dramatic desert landscape of the Sinai Mountains, where the Ten Commandments were said to have been given to Moses, and St Catherine’s Monastery, the most important religious site in Sinai with priceless works of art. The monastery is on the site where God spoke to Moses from a burning bush and has been a pilgrimage site since it was built in the sixth century. In addition to joining a daytime tour active visitors can travel during the night to take part in a dawn trek up Mount Sinai to watch the spectacular sunrise.
