Traveling with RFN By Gale Helser
From the minute you arrive in Galveston, Texas you can feel the stresses of life start to wash away with the tides of the beautiful Gulf of Mexico.
Ships
and sand and sea will welcome your reunion group to a location that has just what you need to host a very memorable reunion event.
First, start with lodging. Most hotel properties are located so close to the beach that you can hear the waves breaking on the beach. A pleasant breeze off of the water will feel refreshing even on the warmest days, especially as you take a long walk along those same beaches. There are many hotel properties to choose from in all ranges of amenities and prices. Contact Sheri Teller at the CVB for free assistance in qualifying and selecting one that will fill your needs.
Second, consider how to fill your days on the island. In this small space, there is not enough room to tell you about all the possibilities, but I will try to highlight a few of the events available. Begin at Moody Gardens, and plan at least a half a day here. Moody features a world class aquarium where you can get “up close and personal” with many interesting sea creatures and, yes, that includes some sharks. You can also wander around in a climate- controlled, all-glass pyramid-designed building filled with native vegetation and animals that have free reign. You can all but reach out and touch them. There are also some very interesting IMAX and 4D theatres that will captivate your interest, making you feel like you are right there while it was being filmed.
Another “must see” is the exhibit with a WWII Naval destroyer

and submarine that you can tour. Add a tour of the historic downtown area with homes that have been restored to their original condition and are listed on the National Register. Have you ever wished you could step foot on the deck of one of those old-style pirate ships? Then step foot on the long ship Elisa, with all the rigging and beauty to rival even the best Hollywood representations found in the popular pirate movies. And, don’t forget the museums, shopping and much more. There is no shortage of things to do and places to go.
One of the things we do best at reunions and ConFAMs© is eat – and Galveston has a plethora of dining selections. While it would be nice to try them all, we only had 3 days to sample the best. And, we did just that. The Holiday Inn treated us to a gourmet dinner that capped off three days of great food selections. In addition, we dined on barbecue fare, seafood delights at Gaidos and a great Italian style buffet. There really is a great selection of dining choices. If you were unable to attend the RFN ConFAM©
, we are sorry we missed
you, but you can still give Sheri a call. She will make arrangements for you to get a first-hand look at what (I’m sure you will agree) is a great site for a reunion!
