Cold War Comment I was impressed by [MOAA essay contest submission “Forgotten Warriors,” by Maj. Lewis Lambert, USAF-Ret., “Points of View,” No- vember 2011] because Lambert’s definition [of the Cold War warrior] fit me exactly. I was born in 1935 and joined the Navy in 1954. However, he seems to feel that

the Cold War took place, primarily, between 1954 and 1963. I’m not sure when the Cold War started, but cer- tainly the 1948-49 Berlin Airlift was a manifestation of it. I spent my en- tire period of service engaged in the Cold War, and I retired in 1983. The Cold War, in fact, continued

through the Korean and Vietnam conflicts and went on probably until the fall of the Soviet empire in 1989. —Capt. Dave Bartholomew, USNR-Ret. Bothell, Wash.

Cover Question I suspect I’m missing something obvious, but [I] can’t quite make the connection between the Coast Guard cover art and anything in the [December 2011 issue]. Can you help me? —Maj. Roger A. Godin, USAF-Ret. via email

Editor’s note: No, you’re not missing anything. Sometimes the magazine features a cover image that is not directly linked to a specific article but that captures the spirit of the military community or some aspect of national service or current events. The magazine staff thought the his- torical image of the Coast Guard performing its mission in a snowy setting captured the feeling of the winter holiday season.
