What’s new in York?
2012 will see a whole host of events including a Chocolate Festival at Easter and the launch of a delicious Chocolate attraction in the Spring. The York Mystery Plays return to Museum Gardens in August and throughout the year we will be celebrating York 800. This marks 800 years since the city was granted a Royal Charter by King John in 1212.
Chocolate – York’s Sweet Story opens Spring 2012
Reinforcing the fascinating story of York’s confectionery past. A chocolate and sweet themed visitor experience will open in Spring. Come along and enjoy a day or evening visit - the perfect addition to any itinerary.
York Mystery Plays - August 2012
The return of the greatest story ever told! York Mystery Plays return to the Museum Gardens for the first time since 1988. The medieval cycle has been told by the people of York for hundreds of years. Dame Judi Dench performed in the plays three times and is a patron for the 2012 performances. Be inspired by Bible stories from Creation to the Last Judgment.
York Minster Revealed
Be the first to see York Minster Revealed in ‘Stories in Glass & Stone’. This new interactive gallery allows visitors to reflect on the incredible scale and exquisite craftsmanship of the Minster’s Great East Window, hailed as England’s ‘Sistine Chapel’. Supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund it is set to open Autumn 2012.
York Castle Museum Summer 2012
Peel back the genteel facade and step onto the reconstructed streets of 19th Century England at the Castle Museum. Kirkgate, is about to get bigger, with new areas and authentic businesses giving an insight into the lives of York’s Victorian inhabitants.
1212: The Making of the City
Discover a brand new exhibition which will bring to life York’s medieval history using collections from York Minster. Opens at the Yorkshire Museum in April 2012.
