PHONOLOGICAL AWARENESS
■ The teacher spreads the cards out randomly on the table and models segmenting a word, blending it back together and choosing the card that matches the word. ■ The teacher then continues by breaking apart (segmenting) a word and the children put it back together (blends) and select the card that matches the word.
Assessment: Using this activity in a small group setting provides the opportunity for the teacher to assess each child’s progress with this skill. A developmental checklist or anecdotal notes could be used to record children’s progress and plan activities based on each child’s individual needs and strengths.
