INTA PREVIEW
INTA EUROPEAN CONFERENCE ON TRADEMARKS AND THE INTERNET
The forthcoming INTA conference will address some of the questions about the new TLDs which are looming for IP and brand professionals who do business online.
T e Internet is forcing old IP laws to accommodate a new kid on the block, while brands must decide what they are going to do when the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) opens the fi rst round of the new top-level domain (TLD) application process on January 12.
T e conference’s fi rst session will take a look at ICANN’s new TLD programme and the corporation’s motives for going ahead with it. Chaired by intellectual property partner David Taylor of Hogan Lovells International LLP, a panel of experts including World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) lawyer Brian Beckham will discuss the rights protection mechanisms that ICANN has put in place to allow brand owners to protect their intellectual property. T e panel will also look at the potential liability of the registrant, registrar and registry when a brand owner is deciding who to sue to enforce its IP rights.
ICANN board chair Dr Stephen Crocker will be the conference’s keynote speaker. His understanding of Internet security and information sharing makes him well placed to understand why some brands fear the new TLD
