Communications Selex Elsag comms
for QE class carriers Selex Elsag, a Finmeccanica company, has signed the second phase of a contract with the Aircraſt Carrier Alliance (ACA) to supply TETRA communications systems for the two new Queen Elizabeth (QE) class aircraſt carriers for the UK Royal Navy. An earlier phase of the agreement provided the design of the system. Te new award involves the manufacture and test of
the main TETRA system for the vessels. When deployed, the TETRA system will provide more than 500 handsets, and will support above-deck aviation teams and below- deck on-board communications for mobile teams and machinery space personnel.
Patrol boats Norway receives
third Skjold FPB On 30 June 2011, DCNS delivered the third Skjold class fast patrol boat (FPB), Steil, to the Royal Norwegian Navy. Te six-boat Skjold programme is led by a consor- tium comprising DCNS and two Norwegian contractors with DCNS acting as the combat system design authority and co-supplier. The Norwegian authorities entrusted the Skjold
programme to a consortium of three contractors with DCNS as the combat system design authority and co-supplier. DCNS is working with Norwegian contrac- tors Umoe Mandal and Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace. With a length of around 50m, the Skjold class FPBs are heavily armed for their size. Te combat system features
eight anti-ship missiles and a 76mm gun. Steil’s combat system was accepted following a final series of trials off Bergen and sea trials in Stavanger in June 2011. The first-of-class, Storm, was handed over on 9
September 2010 and second, Skudd, on 28 October 2010. Construction
Austal wins JHSV
6/7 contract Te US Navy has exercised contract options funding the construction of the sixth and seventh Joint High Speed Vessels (JHSVs) as part of a 10-ship programme potentially worth more than US$1.6 billion. Te construc- tion contract for both vessels is valued at around US$313 million. With options for a further three vessels, the JHSV programme is set deliver a predictable revenue stream of US$347.3 million per year from 2012 to 2015. As prime contractor, Austal was awarded the construc-
tion contract for the first 103m JHSV in November 2008, with options for nine additional vessels between Fiscal Year 2009 (FY09) and FY13. Te Austal JHSV team includes platform systems engineering agent General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems who is responsible for the design, integration and test of the ship’s mission systems, including internal and external communications, electronic navigation, and aviation and armament systems. Austal received authorization from the US Navy
to start construction on the first vessel of the contract, Spearhead (JHSV 1), in December 2009 aſter completing the rigorous design in a 12-month period. At the time of writing, Spearhead was due to be launched in August 2011 and delivered in December 2011. Construction of Vigilant (JHSV 2) began at Austal’s Module Manufactur- ing Facility on 13 September 2010.
