Engines x Caterpillar wins
16-vessel Brazil deal Caterpillar has secured a contract to supply a total of 56 Cat and MaK diesel electric propulsion engine genera- tor sets to a forthcoming cluster of 12 platform supply vessels and four oil spill recovery vessels, currently under construction for operation in the Brazilian offshore market. Among the Cat diesel generator sets ordered are the 3512C DEP, in two power ratings (namely 1550ekW at 1800rpm and 1700ekW at 1800rpm) and the 3516C DEP (2000ekW at 1800rpm). Meanwhile, the MaK DEP solutions will include the MaK 6 M 25 C DEP generator set (1824ekW at 720rpm) and the 8M 25 C generator set (2433ekW at 720rpm). Te MaK DEP solutions feature an ultra-clean, heavy fuel oil (HFO)-burning, long-stroke design, which is intended to grant operators longer intervals between mainte- nance routines, according to Caterpillar. All engine ratings are certified to the E2 emissions
cycle and meet US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Tier 2 and International Maritime Organization (IMO) Tier I requirements on emissions. Te order coincides with attempts by Caterpillar
to expand its footing in the busy Brazilian offshore segment. Te group recently announced that it will be relocating packaging of its 3500 series of diesel genera- tor sets to its manufacturing facility at Piracicaba, São Paulo, Brazil.

LNG
Harvey Gulf International Marine newbuilds will be the first US- flagged platform supply vessels to run on LNG.
Wärtsilä supplies
US LNG duo Wärtsilä has been contracted to supply an integrated propulsion system for two liquefied natural gas (LNG)-fuelled platform supply vessels (PSVs), intended for operation in the Gulf of Mexico and
currently under construction at STX Marine. Te 5520dwt, 13knot vessels, which were ordered by Harvey Gulf International Marine, are touted as the first ever US-flagged PSVs to run on LNG, following their delivery in 2013. Te Wärtsilä system includes dual-fuel machin-
ery, an electrical and automation package, complete propulsion components and all LNG fuel storage and handling parts. Both vessels will be powered by Wärtsilä six-cylinder 34DF dual-fuel engines. According to Wärtsilä, the LNG storage capacity of 290m3

Power systems ABB in Asgard
supply deal Power solutions provider ABB has landed what it describes as a “milestone” contract, having been contracted by Norwegian oil major Statoil and oil services provider Aker Solutions to provide drives and transformers to the subsea power distribution system which delivers energy to the Statoil-operated Asgard subsea oil and gas field, situated in the Norwegian North Sea. The electrical set-up supplied by ABB will be
used to power a subsea gas compression system, located aboard the floating vessel Asgard A, and will transmit 15 megavolt-amperes and 189Hertz, which ABB claims is sufficient energy to power over 10,000 homes, over a distance of 43km. Te group commented: “Once completed, this will be a world record distance as well as the highest voltage and frequency achieved between a drive on a floating production facility and a compressor on the seabed. As extraction gets further away from processing operations, the ability to provide reliable power becomes more challenging.” Veli-Matti Reinikkala, head of ABB’s Process
