Results & Statistics

Apiccaps, the Portuguese shoe and leather association, has just published its first World Footwear Yearbook, which says that for the first time ever, global footwear production surpassed 20 billion pairs of shoes in 2010. The final tally was 20.18 billion pairs, with China as the biggest producer by far with 12.6 billion pairs made there. India was a distant second with just over 2 billion pairs, then Brazil, 894 million pairs; Vietnam, 760 million; Pakistan, 295 million; and Mexico, 244 million. The only other two countries whose production exceeded 200 million pairs were Thailand, with 245 million, and Italy, with 203 million. The Industry and Trade Ministry of Vietnam says that in the first half of

this year, the country exported $7.4 billion worth of products to the EU, 49% more than in the same period last year. The EU accounted for 17.5% of Vietnam’s total exports. Footwear sold to the EU had a value of $940 million in the first five months of 2011, 16% more than in 2010, making up 40% of total footwear exports. The country hopes to reach a total export value of $12.3 billion to the EU for all of 2011. The Council for Leather Exports in India has announced that in the

quarter from April to June, leather exports from the country rose by 5.1% to $811 million. The chairman of the CLE, M. Rafeeque Ahmed, noted that despite the growth and continuing demand in Europe for Indian leather products, producers are reporting lower margins, as the costs of raw materials are rising while product costs remain the same. Manufacturers are also keeping an eye on the exchange rate with the euro, which is currently in India’s favour but its instability is worrying. In the first quarter of the fiscal year, exports of leather footwear grew by 5.2 % to $316 million; leather garments jumped by 18% to $79 million. The Indian government wants the leather industry to have sales of $8.5 billion by 2013-14; this would mean annual growth of about 26%. In the 2010-11 fiscal year, the total growth rate was about 13%.

The Forest of Arden Hotel is a stunning rural escape in the heart of the Midlands, set amidst breathtaking lakes and 10,000 acres of woodland. Guest rooms, restaurants and conference suites have all been modernised to make this an impressive destination, situated just minutes from the NEC, Birmingham International Airport and major rail and motorway links.

Clear tendency for earlier orders among German retailers German shoe industry executives note that more and more suppliers are

posting earlier closing dates for certain lines, partly because of growing sourcing problems in the Far East. A survey conducted by the magazine Schuhkurier among German specialist shoe retailers seems to indicate that they have reacted in kind. According to the survey, 53% of all participating retailers stated that they are ordering earlier than in the last five years, whereas only 16% are ordering later and 31% have not changed their pattern. When ordering for the fall/winter season, 54% of the interviewed

retailers make their decisions for the majority of their product ranges in February. Thirty-four per cent state that March is the most important month, while 9% say they order in January. A similar pattern is seen in the timing for the spring/summer orders.

Fifty-five per cent of the retailers decide in August which brands and models they are going to order, 33% decide in September and 12% decide in July. The findings of the survey are interesting in the light of the discussion about the date of GDS and other trade fairs in the industry, such as fairs held by buying groups, the Bread & Butter fair in Berlin and Micam in Italy. When retailers were asked why they visit the fairs, 26% said they go to gather information about the newest trends, 25% search for new brands and 20% meet with important suppliers. Only 15% of the participating retailers said they actually place orders at the fairs. For most retailers, trade fairs are information tools that should offer a broad outline of the range of products in the market, preferably early in the season. 47% of the interviewed retailers think that trade fairs are very important,

48% believe that they are important and only 5% stated that they are not important at all. Thirty-seven per cent of retailers try out two new suppliers
