New users in the Canary Islands

n collaboration with a partner company in the Canary Islands, Técnicas

Competitivas, Teltronic recently provided an additional batch of digital radios for use on the islands’ government-run TETRA network. The RESCAN network, supplied last

year by a consortium which included the two companies, is designed to be shared by a large number of public service organizations, including autonomous, island and municipal bodies. It provides communications coverage on all seven islands of the archipelago. The additional TETRA units, including

some 120 fi xed and mobile terminals and close to 500 hand-portable terminals, are being supplied to the Canary Islands Government, which will distribute them across the region, and to the San Cristóbal de la Laguna city council. Capable of supporting more than

7000 terminals and 500 communications groups, the RESCAN system is made up of two central nodes, over 70 base stations, a control centre and a network management system.

or yet another major international sporting event in China, a large TETRA network by Cassidian has provided secure

communications support. Held in August in Shenzhen, the 26th

World University Games attracted more than 7800 student athletes from 152 countries and regions across the world to compete in 24 sports categories. During the 12-day Universiade, an emergency response network supplied by Cassidian – the largest 350 MHz TETRA network in China – provided communications to 41 competition and 22 training venues and associated hotels. On the day of the inaugural ceremony of the Universiade, August 12, it registered 1·84 million calls.

irwave, which has built a dedicated TETRA mobile radio network to support the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, has completed the fi rst land-to-sea testing of the system off the south coast of England.

Recognized as a world-class sailing destination and acknowledged by the Royal Yachting Association as the best in northern Europe, waters off the county of Dorset will host all the sailing events for London 2012 between July and September 2012. “It is the fi rst time that we have performed

land-to-sea coverage testing of a radio network and this followed months of planning by our team of engineers”, said David Sangster, UK services director of Airwave. “With the upcoming sailing events for London 2012 taking place in Dorset it is vital that we provide a world-class PMR network.” Known as Apollo, the PMR network has been purpose-built to provide communications at all London 2012

Covering the whole Shenzhen area, the

Shenzhen 350 MHz City Emergency Response Digital Trunking Network is equipped with two switches, 87 base stations and 110 dispatching workstations. T e network is also the fi rst TETRA network in China to be fully integrated with all public safety command and control centres. n Also playing a part in the event was a TETRA network supplied by Cassidian for the Shenzhen Metro. In preparation for the Universiade, the Metro’s infrastructure had been enlarged with fi ve new lines extending to an additional 178·8 kilometres were put in place. T e TETRA network provided interconnected, seamless communication along all the lines.

Finding success in Australia’s mines

inning nine contracts in little more than a year to supply TETRA terminals to major

recently for their digital communications. Sepura attributes these successes to the

robustness and ruggedness of its radios, which it says have made them a natural choice for the harsh environments of the mining industry. In addition, their ‘man down’ emergency

feature – one of the most accurate in the TETRA market today, Sepura claims – and exceptional audio quality are vital features for mining personnel who work in isolation in challenging and noisy settings.

competition venues, from the Olympic Park itself to sites such as Glasgow, Manchester and Coventry. Voice communications will be provided for over 18 000 staff and volunteers working for the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG), including offi cials involved in the sailing events.

“A secure and effective radio

communications service is a critical piece of infrastructure, and extending the network to include Weymouth Bay and Portland Harbour means that for the fi rst time we are able to include a land-to-sea solution”, Mr Sangster added.
