WHAT’S NEW Digital temperature sensor
Following the launch of its SHT2x family of humidity and temperature sensors, Sensirion is now offering a sensor designed exclusively for temperature measurement. The new STS21 temperature sensor is based on the same chip as the SHT2x family and is housed in a DFN package measuring 3 x 3 mm. This makes the sensor ideal for use in applications where only very limited space is available. The company says the sensor delivers outstanding performance and accuracy of ±0.22 °C over the temperature range of 5 to 60 °C, combined with very low power consumption, which is an important consideration for battery operated devices. The STS21 is pin and protocol compatible with Sensirion’s standard SHT21 humidity sensor, but it has a different I2C address. This allows the STS21 to be used as an alternative to the SHT21 in applications where temperature measurement is required and humidity measurement is optional, because the same hardware can be used with both sensors. The STS21 temperature sensor is fully calibrated and provides a digital output.

Force gauges for materials testing
The new series of Chatillon digital force gauges from Ametek Test & Calibration Instruments is suitable for medical device and packaging materials testing. With Bluetooth communication and full-colour displays, these new models span the full range of handheld and stand-mounted force gauges for the simplest “Go-No Go” to sophisticated quality control applications. The high-end DFS II has
onboard Bluetooth connectivity for wireless transmission of readings to a computer. It can be equipped with integral load cells or smart remote sensors for load measurement and torque measurement. Accuracy is reportedly better than 0.1% full scale. The DFE II gauge for is handheld or test stand applications. It supports a variety
of standard gauge functions including normal and peak readings, high/low limits, set points, pass/fail results, statistical results, load cell actuation and direction. The DFX II gauge is an economical solution for basic peak force measurement. The new model adds a rechargeable power supply and greater accuracy. It is available in four capacities (10lbf, 50 lbf, 100 lbf, 200 lbf) and features an integral load cell with a measurement accuracy of reportedly ±0.3% of full scale.

Custom electronics design and manufacture
The Berliner Glas Group now offers custom OEM electronics development and manufacturing. The medical applications business unit is using the company’s expertise as a supplier of optical components, optomechanics and optical system solutions to provide complete OEM system designs in volume. Design capabilities include electrooptic systems that can be autoclaved while maintaining precision alignment. Also available are OEM 3D imaging and measurement systems for 3D imaging of teeth, minimally invasive surgery and ophthalmology applications.
Capabilities include the development, regulation and
control of LED light sources, drive and cooling elements with the associated sensors, as well as camera systems with their own electronics, communication via USB, displays and membrane keyboards.

70 Watt brushless flat motor
maxon motor has added a 70 W version to its line of flat motors. The EC 45 flat 70 W displays a flat speed/ torque gradient and features flange pattern, fixation and socket identical to the existing EC 45 flat 50 W version, yet delivers 38% more torque.
The new design provides a maximum continuous torque of
130 mNm at an efficiency of up to 85%, which makes it the ideal choice for self-contained drive systems, says the company.
It is available with Hall sensors and comes in four windings: 24, 30, 36, 48 V. It can be combined with more than 54 different planetary and spur gearheads of series GP 42 C and GS 45 A. For control purposes, there is a variety of servo controllers (DEC, DECS, DECV and DES) and positioning controllers (EPOS2 and EPOS2 P) to choose from. Designed as internal or external rotor motors, the flat design of these brushless DC flat motors makes them particularly useful when space is limited.
