EtO sterilisable packaging films Amcor Flexibles will be featuring its range of buried nylon (BNE) films for packaging syringes, needles and vascular access devices at Compamed this November. The strength of these films ensures high levels of transit protection, says the company. In addition, BNE films are known for their good thermoforming characteristics and show minimum reversion to enable effective product loading, which is valuable when packaging catheters. Commenting on the BNE line, Neil Hawkesford, Coextruded Films Product Manager, said, “With a wide choice of film gauges ranging from 50 to 200 microns, BNE films are suitable for ethylene oxide sterilisation and can be used for a range of applications including the packaging of larger dressings and drapes. The material has a wide processing window to allow for efficient packaging lines, maintaining forming performance at higher speeds.” BNE typically seals to Amcor direct seal papers to give a cost-

effective, complete package. Other options are available to provide higher quality peel performance including coated Tyvek and grid-coated papers, also available from Amcor. Amcor Flexibles Europe & Americas Tel. +44 (0)117 987 2610, www.amcor.com/medicaleurope

Automated measurement systems

Improved material transparency

Objet, specialist in 3D printing for rapid prototyping and additive manufacturing, has launched a new biocompatible 3D printing material. According to company, the material combines biocompatibility with high dimensional stability and clear transparency. This makes it useful for PMMA simulation and a range of medical and dental applications, particularly the production of accurate, customised surgical guides.

The MED610 material is suitable for prolonged skin contact of more than 30 days and mucosal-membrane contact of up to 24 hours. It conforms to ISO 10993 for cytotoxicity, genotoxicity, delayed type hypersensitivity and irritation and USP Class VI, and is manufactured under ISO 13485:2003 certification, according to the company.

Independent Healthcare Service (IHS), a supplier of healthcare equipment to customers in Dublin and other parts of southern Ireland, is using the Rigel Medical 288 analyser for the electrical safety testing of its products. IHS is using three 288 medical grade testers to ensure the electrical safety of powered bed frames, pressure relieving systems and patient lift and electric wheelchair chargers located in hospitals, nursing homes and private homes. The tester provides accurate testing of polarity, earth continuity, insulation resistance, operational and earth leakage. Once a test is complete, the analyser will indicate pass or fail and print out a bar- coded label that can be attached to the tested device. The information collected and stored on the hand-held 288 device can then be uploaded to a Rigel Medical Med-eBase software-driven PC database, which provides electronic recording and management of medical device safety testing programmes. Using this software, IHS can provide its customers with reports detailing all the equipment tested, when the inspections were performed and which items passed or failed. Rigel Medical

ResMed has selected SABIC’s Cycoloy and Lexan resins to enhance the performance, aesthetics and sustainability of its new ResMed S9 series of sleep apnea devices. Cycoloy polycarbonate/ acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene resin, featuring non-halogenated flame retardance and high flow, is used to mould the complex, thin-wall S9 chassis. SABIC’s Lexan resin, a tough, biocompatible material with good surface finish, is used for the S9 top case and H5 humidifier flip lid.

ResMed chose these materials for major components of its S9 series for several reasons. Gary Robinson, Vice President, Supplier Alliance at ResMed, said, “These eco-progressive thermoplastic resins provided important advantages, including superior design flexibility and outstanding performance and usability. SABIC also delivered important value-added services, from colour matching to process optimisation, which helped us achieve our goals.” SABIC Innovative Plastics tel. +31 164 292 911, www.sabic.com
