Med-Tech Innovation Event preview

Medelec: Medical Electronics Conference and Exhibition 29 November 2011, Cambridge, UK www.medelec.co.uk

Medelec 2011 is focusing on electronics components and embedded systems used in the design, development and manufacture of medical devices. The event gives electronic engineers an opportunity to get up to date on the latest technology through a technical seminar programme and demonstrations of innovative software and hardware technologies.

Some of the world’s top semiconductor companies will be speaking including Intel, Analog Devices and Renesas Electronics. A talk by Quentin Ochem of Adacore will provide examples of how modern programming practices such as continuous integration or agile development can be used to address safety concerns, how the choice of the right programming language can affect testing and verification, and how shifting the emphasis of the software development cycle early can reduce costs and provide safer software.

Software debug tools

In the exhibition, Lauterbach will be discussing the company’s debug technologies that help engineers fully understand system behaviour in high-speed and complex embedded systems. Barry Lock, the company’s UK Manager, said, “We will be demonstrating how our Trace technology can assist engineers in ensuring code quality and code performance, and how we can help in achieving the necessary medical industry approvals.” www.lauterbach.com

Bespoke software development

BitWise will outline its expertise in developing bespoke software solutions for companies that wish to focus on the hardware and physical design elements, or that have software intensive products and require a partner to help bring products to market on time and on budget. By providing skills in design, architecture, verification and safety, in addition to development, BitWise says it can remove many of the major risks associated with product creation and evolution. www.bitwisegroup.com

A software solution

Wind River will be at the show to talk about its recently introduced Platform for Medical Devices. This is part of a comprehensive software portfolio designed for medical device development. The platform is built on the company’s VxWorks real- time operating system and offers developers ready-to-use security and scalability so that they can optimise their run-time environment using only the specific technologies required by their device. It also has a comprehensive vendor qualification summary, which includes documented descriptions of the controls and processes Wind River uses to design and develop its platform components. www.windriver.com

Help with validation

To assist device manufacturers through the software validation process Vector Software’s VectorCAST provides automation of all unit, integration and system testing activities, including structural coverage analysis and completely automatic regression testing. With this technology, testing can be performed on the production hardware, on evaluation boards or with target simulators. VectorCAST/Cover enables engineers to automatically monitor and record which parts of the application have been stimulated by each system test. www.vectorcast.com

www.med-techinnovation.com Testing tool upgrade

IPL will be exhibiting the newest version (6.1) of its software testing tool Cantata++. This is an upgrade of the tool making it available on new platforms such as MSVC 2010 and also the 4.6 release of the gcc compiler. The company says Cantata++ has a long history of use in medical device software because of the support it gives to the relevant software and safety standards that govern such activities. www.ipl.com

Pre-integrated solutions on offer

QNX Software Systems recognises the importance of delivering pre-integrated solutions. The company’s partner ecosystem includes a range of processors, protocols (connectivity, security and networking), tools and package solutions for building almost any reliable and safety-critical medical device. Visitors will see the QNX Medical Reference Design in action. This comprises the FDA Certifiable QNX Neutrino RTOS, Qt 4.7.1 Human Machine Interface, connectivity to Continua Certified medical devices, Bluetooth health device profile (Sybase iAnywhere), and remote device connectivity featuring the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. www.qnx.com

Photomultiplier tubes

Hamamatsu Photonics will be introducing a new range of high sensitivity photomultiplier tubes (PMTs). The H10682 series are photon counting heads, incorporating a SBA/UBA PMT together with a high speed photon counting circuit and a high voltage power supply circuit. www.hamamatsu.co.uk

Software testing tool

LDRA will be showcasing its tool suite, which provides comprehensive requirements traceability, source code analysis and testing facilities for assisting companies to meet IEC 62304 software development and verification requirements. www.ldra.com
