SUNNYSIDE I UP
Clouds cannot stop winner
The eleventh World Solar Challenge has finished with teams completing the gruelling challenge to drive a self sufficient solar powered car from Darwin to Adelaide. In the closest fought competition to date a Japanese team just beat a team from the Netherlands.
Team Tokai from Japan did their country proud as they crossed the finish of timing line first in the Veolia World Solar Challenge at 1.07 pm Darwin time. They took 32 hours and 45 minutes to drive their car, Tokai Challenger2, 3021 kilometres on solar power averaging a speed of 91.54 kilometres per hour. The happy team and support crew celebrated at the finish line in Angle Vale before making their way to the official ceremony in Adelaide’s Victoria Square where champagne flowed and traditional fountain dunking entertained the waiting crowds.
In one of the closest contests in the event’s history the gallant Nuon team from the Netherlands gave it all they had. The two teams shared the final checkpoint in Port Augusta just minutes apart. But as the sun faded and the clouds rolled in it became clear the Dutch team in their vehicle Nuna 6, were not going to catch the Japanese team and would have to be content with second across the line. Team Nuon arrived in Angle Vale at 2.12 pm Darwin time in a time of 33.5 hours with an average speed of 88.62 kilometres per hour.
The American Champions, the team from Michigan University, crossed the line 3rd reaching Angle Vale at 3.55 pm, in 35 hours and 33 minutes with an average speed of 84.33 kilometres.
Teams at the rear of the field were forced to trailer their vehicles in order to make Adelaide as heavy cloud scuppered plans for the vehicles to make the finish line. Their solar kilometres have been logged and will be used to calculate final positions.
Japan and Netherlands had the most success and the closest finishes with Ashiya claiming fourth ahead of the Twente team in fifth.
At the time of writing some of the back teams were still racing and expected to complete the event in the next few days.
Bad luck plagued a number of teams for this years event with the Umicore team from Belgium who after replacing their battery and accepting a time penalty had further battery issues forcing them to trailer into Port Pirie. Many other teams at the rear of the field had to trailer their vehicles to ensure they reach Victoria Square in time to share in the ceremony and festivities at the planned weekend finale.
