PITT STREET – Te street was named by Jonathan Scott for Sir William Pitt, Earl of Chatham and prime minister of England from 1766 to 1768. ROYALL AVENUE – Te name of this street was changed from Com- mon Street in 1950. Te Royalls were prominent planters, and Rob- ert V. Royall served as town survey- or in 1889 and intendant (mayor) from 1898 to 1914. SCOTT STREET – Tis street was named for Jonathan Scott, the origi- nal owner of Greenwich Village and Greenwich Mill. VENNING STREET – Te street was named for property owner Nicholas Venning. His father, Col. Samuel Venning, defended the settle- ment during the Revolutionary War. His relative, Elias Venning, was in- tendant (mayor) from 1865 to 1866. WHILDEN STREET – Tis street was named for Elias Whilden, a land-

owner and planter appointed to lay- out the original town with Andrew Hibben, Joshua Toomer and Samuel Venning following Mount Pleasant’s 1837 incorporation. He was inten- dant (mayor) from 1857 to 1858. The names on these streets and many others came to us as a legacy from the early inhabitants, land- owners, prominent businessmen and community leaders. Of course, the future holds even more growth and change; contribute to that growth and maybe a street will be named after you.
