VARIOUS ‘LIVE & REMASTERED - 20TH ANNIVERSARY BOXSET’ (MINISTRY OF SOUND UK)

WHILE everyone is currently copying the ‘90s style of masters like Todd Terry and David Morales, ex-Ministry of Sound resident Justin Berkmann realised he actually had original DAT recordings of their early sets at the club – which opened as an alcohol free venue on 21st September 1991 – sitting at home alongside others of ex-Studio 54 resident Kenny Carpenter and Larry

Levan, one of disco’s most celebrated names. Now remastered and presented in a natty box set, with another mix from Justin himself, they provide a thrilling glimpse into the club’s earliest days and hark back to the Ministry’s pioneering booking of US guest DJs, something that previously was unheard of at the time but now chimes again with the US’s dance resurgence.

PHAELEH DJWEEKLY PODCAST #58

Wowing us with his fi rst album ‘Fallen Light’, which infused dubstep with a rarely seen melodic sweetness, Bristol-based Phaeleh returned last month with a similarly attuned mini LP ‘The Cold in You’. Jammed full of unreleased dubs, his podcast opens up this world of swirling synths and ghostly ethereal voices,

switching up between garagey breaks and half-step skank. Let’s be clear, the bass does drop, but by weaving it in and out of different textures and shades, and making you wait for the gritty payoff, it has all the more impact when it does.
