The Physical Disabil- ity Board of Review provides veterans who were medically separated from the military between Sept. 11, 2001, and Dec. 31, 2009, with a chance to have their disability ratings reviewed for fairness, consistency, and accuracy. To be eligible, a


veteran must have received a combined disability rating of 20


Afghan Leaders Meet Navy Imam

ullahs and imams, Muslim religious leaders, are key infl u- encers in Afghanistan, where


years of war have removed the government and military offi cials who normally would share power. Typically, U.S. servicemem- bers are dissuaded from discussing religion with local Afghans, but in September, a Navy chaplain traveled Helmand province to begin a religion-based dialogue. “The purpose of that visit was to talk to [the Afghans] about their daily lives,” says Lt. Asif Balbale (above, right), a Mus- lim chaplain and an imam. “It was also for them to be able to see the diversity

we have in the U.S. armed forces. Just for them to see an imam in the U.S. armed forces is a shock value for them. They had never imagined that is even possible.” Balbale’s youthful features made his


hosts in Sangin skeptical at fi rst, but the conversation soon took an easy tone. “This country has been through many


wars, and unfortunately, there hasn’t been a steady infl ux of information into this country. So they are not aware of Muslims living in the U.S. being able to peacefully live side-by-side with diff erent faith com- munities,” says Balbale.
