for more pay; I simply worked hard for promotion and was happy when it happened and lived within the pay structure it produced. Retirement was something down the line that I would enjoy, but it was not the factor that prompted me to continue my service. I found this attitude prevailed with all of my shipmates. Months of deployment were accepted, and our spouses and our children carried on with their daily lives. Wives took over the responsibility of the hus- bands and held the family together until their return. There was no returning home after an eight-hour work day, and … it was accepted. This “opportunity” is open to all who can qualify, but for some reason not all want to pursue it. I wonder why. The last four decades have pro- duced a continuing attempt to change military pay and retirement to a ci- vilian base. There is no comparison between the two, nor should there be. The demands on a military ser- vicemember are unique, because they cover such a broad field of require- ments. … This fact is missed by most of those who would attempt to equate us differently. I am well aware of the need for the nation to adjust its ex- penditures, but to jeopardize its future security is unwise.
