WHERE WE PLAY FAVORITE LOCAL ESCAPES
RICK HALEY, St. Louis, MO RACHELLE LOCKE, Overland Park, KS
Most of the time you can find me on Indian Creek Trail in Overland Park, Kansas. It is a very peaceful trail with a lot of scenic natural features to enjoy, such as a small river that flows beside the entire trail.
Matson Hill Park is located 15 minutes from my house, and it is within the Daniel Boone Historic District. The park is reminiscent of the era during Boone’s life. It is close to the city, but when hiking there, it makes me feel like I’m far from everything.
RAY DELONG, Oklahoma City, OK CANDACE BOTELHO, Ft. Worth, TX
Penitentiary Hollow in Mineral Wells State Park, Texas. This small and beautiful canyon satisfies my passion for climbing and keeps me in shape for more challenging climbs.
RICHARD MANGOLD, Tulsa, OK
The Osage Hills State Park area has almost everything worth exploring in Oklahoma. There is both smooth and rugged terrain, diverse animal and plant life, scenic valleys and hills, lakes and streams, and crags and cliffs. Walking, hiking, and biking bring new vistas just around the next bend. The fall foliage is spectacular, and among the most beautiful anywhere.
My favorite adventure is kayaking the North Canadian River with my family and friends. It is a great four- or five-hour trip from the put- in at Yukon to Lake Overholser, depending on how fast the flow is. Be sure and check with the Overholser boathouse to make sure the water is high enough to paddle.
