SEXUAL HEALTH
Sam Rehan, sales manager of Optomic UK Ltd, talks about the new advantages of the use of low-intensity extracorporeal shock waves, specially designed for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
The problem rectile dysfunction E
rectile dysfunction, also known as ED, can be a total inability to achieve erection, an inconsistent ability to do so, or a tendency to sustain only brief erections. These variations make defining ED and es- timating its incidence difficult.
An estimated 30 million men in the United States – 10% of the male population –ex- perience chronic ED, although as few as 5% seek treatment. It may affect 50% of men between the ages of 40 and 70. Transient loss or inadequate erection affects men of all ages.
The technology – low-intensity shock waves
For approximately 20 years the external shockwaves technology has been very well- known for urinary stone fragmentation. The technology has been used for the last six years in cardiology, at an intensity ten times lower, creating neovascularization in the heart. The same technique is also used to treat vascular related erectile dysfunc- tion, inducing angiogenesis on the penile shaft and crus.
The results
Discernable improvements in the erectile function can be visible as the patient pro-
ceeds with his treatments. Recent clinical studies revealed that patients reported a high rate of satisfaction for more than one year after treatment, and no side effects have been reported.
