G


iven the changes to pathology provi- sion and ever more stringent auditing and compliance requirements, there is an increasing need to manage pathology sam- ples from multiple sites.


To fill this need, an original Technidata specimen management system has been introduced, providing excellent sample routing and tracking features within the Core Laboratory.


Technidata have been providing labora- tory information system (LIS) software for over 30 years. One of the main drivers be- hind Technidata’s new developments was ISO15189, the design goal being to help laboratories comply fully with this interna- tional standard.


Sample management has always been chal- lenging, even in medium-sized organisa- tions. Samples can go missing internally or between locations by being routed to the wrong hospital, for example. This has im- pacts on both patient care and finance, be- cause the sample collection then has to be repeated. However, if the sample is unique, such as in histology, it may be impossible to obtain another sample, which means the implications can be even more significant.


In response, Technidata has developed a fully integrated sample management solu- tion that ensures that every pathology sam- ple is tracked throughout its journey.


This solution covers all aspects of sam- ple management; from initial reception through aliquot management, tracking and verification of sample types, dispatch to other locations, monitoring of transport time, and sample reception at destination. The primary goal of this solution is to en- sure that no samples are ever lost, and that they are routed to the correct destination first time, every time.


Sample reception


One critical aspect of any laboratory pro- cess is that the correct samples arrive in time for the tests requested.


The new sample reception solution provides a simple interface for the operator to confirm that the correct samples have arrived. It thus allows non-conformities to be identified.


Sample transport


In a multi-site environment, samples are routinely required to be transported be- tween sites, so tracking dispatch and recep- tion is essential to ensuring a high quality service. Four key areas of the TD-Synergy Specimen Management process include:


Aliquoting – All samples for aliquoting are captured and processed either manually or by an automated system. Unique aliquot numbers are created for tracking within the organisation. In-Racking – Users populate configurable racks with the correct samples for transportation to a production laboratory.


Pick-up Rack – The TD solution generates a collection list for a specific transport route.


Reception – Once at the correct destina- tion, samples are received into the labora- tory. This closes the transport loop, making received samples available for processing.


Process Overview


The TD-Synergy LIMS provides a full pathol- ogy solution to meet the modern require- ments of all disciplines and departments.


The new sample management solution is another step forward in managing a com- plex pathology organisation.
