GermanyReview Sovereign’s network widens
German trucking company Sovereign Speed has expanded its network to Glasgow, reveals manag- ing partner Karim El-Sayegh. “Later this year, we are looking at connect- ing Marseille and Nice to our network,” he added. The company has also
moved into new premises in Frankfurt, transferring to a newly-built facility that allows Sovereign to handle “more than four times the cargo volume compared to our former warehouse,” El-Sayegh explained. “We are also actively searching for a larger building to

host our Paris Charles de Gaulle operation, and I am confi- dent that the move will be completed before winter.” Sovereign is also upgrading its credentials. Its application
for Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) status was, as ACW went to press, expected to be posted before the end of September. “As soon as we have concluded on this project, our certification and compliance team will be focusing on Cargo 2000,” he added. This developmental work is under way, unaffected by the
uncertainty that plague many of those active in Europe’s air freight industry at the moment. El-Sayegh noted: “Since the lion’s share of our business is generated from intra-European to-door and door-to-airport traffic, we haven’t seen any weaker demand from our customer base.” On the subject of RunAir, the collaborative trucking enter-
prise involving Sovereign as well as other road feeder services providers, he remarked: “The development has been satisfactory.”
UPS to grow presence at Cologne Bonn
Atlanta-headquartered express services giant UPS is to expand the company’s already large presence at its Cologne Bonn International airport European hub. Expected to cost US$200
million, the programme will represent the largest investment in facilities outside the US in the company’s history. Due to be completed by the
end of 2013, the hub will be upgraded with the installation of state-of-the-art technology as well as a major extension to the company’s existing freight build- ing at Cologne Bonn. The expansion will be partly dedicated to the handling of
larger freight shipments, while the hub’s overall sorting capacity will be raised from 110,000 to 190,000 packages an hour. Jim Barber, president of UPS Europe, said: “The Cologne hub
has served us well for 25 years and continues to be exactly where we need it in order to best serve our customers on the important trading lanes within Europe, and beyond to the Americas and Asia.” He added: “This investment
demonstrates our long-term confidence in, and commit- ment
to, the European
economy and its businesses that continue to produce goods sought after the world over.” UPS said that its investment
will position it for further traffic growth in Europe. “This announcement is good news for UPS customers in Europe and all over the world,” Barber pointed out. “Increased capacity and efficiency at our Cologne Bonn facil-
ity will ensure they continue to enjoy the highest possible levels of service,” he concluded.
