RYA PRACTICAL COURSES SAIL & MOTOR
The courses in this brochure are designed to complement our water based courses.
All our courses on the water will include an element of teaching in navigation techniques, rules of the road, meteorology etc, but there is no substitute for studying the subject in more depth. It’s therefore advisable to take the appropriate level of shorebased training before completing one of the practical courses shown here (see the diagram on page 2).
MOTOR CRUISING PRACTICAL COURSES
Helmsman’s Course 2 day introductory course ideal for new boat owners and crew members. Learn basic boat handling skills, engine checks and safety on board.
SAIL CRUISING PRACTICAL COURSES
Day Skipper 4 day course for aspiring skippers with some boat handling and navigation experience. Take charge on short passages and gain an insight into electronic aids such as GPS and radar.
Coastal Skipper 5 day advanced course for more experienced skippers. Take charge and make decisions on longer, more challenging passages, resulting in relaxed, well-planned trips with a happy crew.
Start Yachting 2 day introductory course for complete beginners. Experience steering the boat, sail handling, ropework and safety on board.
Competent Crew 5 day course for aspiring crew members, not just passengers. More experience of steering, sail handling, keeping a lookout and living on board. A great hands-on course to inspire confidence.
RYA PRACTICAL EXAMS SAIL & MOTOR
Whether you have completed an RYA practical course or not, if you have the appropriate level of experience you could be eligible to take one of our exams and gain a Certificate of Competence. RYA Certificates of Competence are for
those wanting to work in the industry, or for those simply wanting a gauge of their ability and experience. They are some of the most useful and credible of all yachting qualifications and thoroughly test the skipper’s ability. More information and an online
exam booking facility can be found on
