SEA SURVIVAL
A one-day course for anyone going to sea, providing an understanding of how to use the safety equipment on board your boat. A genuine lifesaver
Cruising is one of the safest leisure sporting activities, and 99.9% of those afl oat will never use their liferaft. However, if you are part of the unlucky 0.1% your chances of survival will be greatly increased if you understand how to use the equipment and how to help yourself. It is a well-proven fact that, in the event of an emergency at sea, people with training are more likely to survive.
Course topics include ³ liferafts and the equipment they contain

The Short Range Certifi cate is the qualifi cation required by law if you operate a VHF radio fi tted with Digital Selective Calling (DSC) on any British vessel voluntarily fi tted with a radio. A radio is an important piece of safety equipment on board and it is vital to understand the correct procedures. Unnecessary transmissions could block out a Mayday distress call.
Course topics include ³ the basics of radio operation ³ the correct frequencies (channels) to be used
³ distress, emergency and medical assistance procedures
³ making ship to shore telephone calls ³ Digital Selective Calling (DSC) using simulators
³ Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS)
³ Search and Rescue (SART)
³ Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRB)
The course will be taught using radio simulators and will be examined by a short written test.
All new VHF sets are either fi tted, or can be interfaced, with DSC allowing calls to specifi c vessels. If you hold the ‘old’ VHF licence (pre-1999) you need to upgrade your qualifi cation if you purchase new equipment. This can be done by attending this one-day course or, if no tuition is required, you can enter for direct examination.
RYA/ISAF OFFSHORE SAFETY
Training for recreational and racing skippers and crews who may encounter rough weather and problems at sea
At the end of the course you will have a good knowledge of the safety equipment carried on small boats and the seamanship techniques needed to survive at sea in heavy weather.
Course topics include ³ the one day sea survival course ³ half a day of training in seamanship
and emergencies, including heavy weather seamanship, weather forecasting, fi re fi ghting and man overboard recovery
The certifi cate awarded conforms with the eligibility requirements of section 6.01 of the ISAF Special Regulations for category 0, 1 and some category 2 off shore races. These regulations require a percentage of the crew to have taken personal survival training. Full details of the Special Regulations can be found on
