Data radio update adds vehicle tracking to Stockholm’s tram and light rail network


S


tockholm’s city transport authority has ordered 1000 new TETRA radios from Sepura to update voice and data communications within its tram and light rail operations. Te contract was awarded by Storstockholms Lokaltrafik (SL), the public transport authority for the greater Stockholm area, to Swedish Radio Supply, Sepura’s partner in Sweden. SRS will supply 250 radios for trams and 750 aboard trains, to help serve the 1·1 million people who use the Stockholm public transport network daily. Te new radios will be used to transmit both voice and data traffic across SL’s TETRA network. Te data will consist primarily of automatic vehicle location (AVL) information. SRS has provided a complete package by bringing together two


Stockholm-based suppliers: TBT, which is responsible for installation and maintenance, and LS Electronics, which will develop a new user interface panel. Installation work is due to be completed by June 2012. “Tis project will securely deliver data which will help in all aspects of


SL’s operations, not the least of which is the improvement in customer service”, said Johnny Dahlquist, of SRS. “We are already the leading supplier of terminals on to the nationwide RAKEL network, with a significant number of military and emergency services customers using Sepura radios, and we are delighted that Swedish transport agencies are also now migrating to TETRA and Sepura.”


Metro TETRA in Latin America


N


ew metro lines in the Dominican Republic and Panama are to


be equipped with DigiMax TETRA infrastructure from Thales. Already successfully deployed on


Santo Domingo’s Line 1 in the Dominican Republic, the Thales system will now be deployed for onboard, ground-based and dispatcher communications on Line 2. This 20-kilometre route is expected to carry some 270000 passengers a day when it opens next year. The existing TETRA management system on Line 1 will be shared between both lines. A DigiMax solution will also be


deployed at 11 TETRA radio sites on Panama City’s first metro line. The 14 km stretch will open in 2013.


n DigiMax is a fully IP-based distributed architecture capable of supporting up to 32 regions and 960000 users. Features of Thales’ TETRA network technology include TEDS and WIMAX integration for high-speed data needs.

Metro system upgrade I


n the Basque country of northern Spain, TETRA operator Itelazpi is extending its network to serve the Metro system of the


city of Bilbao, replacing an existing TETRA infrastructure there. Te Biscay Transport Consortium (CTB


in Spanish) – which includes Bilbao Metro as service operator, Euskal Trenbide Sarea (ETS) as transport infrastructure management company and EuskoTren as multi-line service operator – has signed an agreement with Itelazpi, the Basque Government TETRA communications service provider. Under this agreement, the Metro will use a Teltronic TETRA infrastructure supplied by Teltronic and Grupo CYS. Bilbao Metro will replace its existing TETRA


installation with Teltronic’s latest-generation Nebula infrastructure, which is already used by Itelazpi to provide coverage across the whole of the Basque Country. Tis will be extended further during 2011 to include the railway’s underground sections. Besides Bilbao Metro, the Itelazpi network’s


customers include a number of Basque Country government entities, ambulance services, local councils and municipal water companies.

n Itelazpi’s TETRA network, which provides wide-area shared radio coverage for Basque public bodies and institutions is made up of 137 base stations deployed across the whole of the Basque country. With the rollout to Bilbao’s underground system, it will grow to 161 base stations by the end of 2011. Features for users include a variety of voice and data services – for example, automatic vehicle and person location, telemetry, remote resources management and database access from the radio terminal.
